I was traveling by train, and Hotel Vitoria showed up with reasonable reviews, good price, and a great location. It did not disappoint. From the Coimbra train station (not Coimbra-B, which is the main stop for the intercity trains), you only have to walk about two blocks. And the location is also very convenient for sight-seeing, located between the university and the mosteiros on the other side of the river.
My room wasn't grand, but certainly adequate in size, with a comfortable bed and a window that offered a slight view of the river. The bathroom was small, but featured a stand-up shower with a shower head that could be mounted up high, greatly appreciated after taking showers in tubs with a hand sprayer.
My one minor difficulty was getting back in one evening. I wasn't out extremely late, but went to see a folklore performance as part of the Festas da Cidade e da Rainha Santa Isabel. The doors were closed after I walked back. With some knocking someone did come in a few minutes to let me in. That was fine, but perhaps plan better than I did. The staff was otherwise very friendly and helpful.More
