I stayed here for 2 nights and was very pleased with my room and bathroom which were modern and well maintained. The bed was comfortable with nice pillows. There is no insulation in the doors however so you can hear people talking in the corridor unfortunately, but it was quiet after 11pm. The lift can get busy but there are two lifts.
Breakfast was excellent with plenty of choice and an egg cooking station where you could choose different fillings in your omelette. They only cook a few fried eggs at a time so that they are fresh. Staff were really nice in the breakfast room which makes all the difference when travelling solo.
The staff were very helpful regarding what to see in the old town which is about 10 minutes walk from the hotel through a Commercial area. The signposts direct you to the University and old town. There are buses to the University as well and a hill lift which is not easy to find until you've struggled to the top, best to ask for the name of the road!
I was recommended a really good hair salon called Personalia, just around the corner from the hotel and I also ate supper in a plaza m, the restaurant is called Praca Velha on Praia do Commercio, a restaurant offering a budget menu alongside more expensive choices.
Thank you hotel Vila Gale, I loved my stay and the indoor pool, which was amazing!
I can't believe someone took a point off in their review for the location, it's a hotel review and in any case you won't find a better hotel in the centre as Coimbra is small!

Check in was troublesome duty to a large influx of guests and a staff ill prepared to deal with the situation. The rooms are spacious and clean.
There is a good view of the river and city.
Plenty of options for dining and shopping within walking distance.

A really good option for a holiday stay. The hotel is modern, clean with really helpful staff.
Coimbra is a treasure, very Portuguese, inexpensive, with lots of history. The hotel is very much dedicated to coach tours but if you avoid the times they go to breakfast or check out, the hotel is quiet. We tend to go to the pool in the morning. This was blissful as there was usually between 3 and 17 people at the pool in the middle of August. The pool and area is very clean and safe, being only 1.2 metres deep. There is a pool bar and meals are available.
Our room was excellent, overlooking the river. The maid service was very good.
We would certainly go again.

If I had to find anything to complain about this hotel it would be the fact that it is not in the center of Coimbra. But it's only 10 minute walk there, so I won't complain :)
This 10 minute walk buys you:
- 2 good swimming pools, outdoor and indoor, hot tub
- great view on the river
- easy car access with underground parking
- good breakfast
- nice clean modern rooms
Overall we loved it. While parents were exploring Coimbra, teens were relaxing in the pool, so it's a win-win :)

Stayed at this hotel whilst travelling through Portugal.
Lovely hotel with very spacious checkin and restaurant.
The room was a good size and had underground parking (charged extra) which was great for the motorbikes.
The pool was lovely but a tad cold.
Enjoyed walking into town which was about a 10 min walk.
However I would say that Coimbra for me was not very interesting and did not feel is easy and relaxed as other places we stayed during our trip.
2 thumbs up for the hotel but nothing for Coimbra!
PS. Breakfast was lovely.
