The photos don't do this property justice, beautiful as they are they don't really show this dreamy wonder off to its full beauty and versatility. I had a feeling it was a gem but it wasn't until we arrived that I realised what a prize we had found. I loved the house, at times I felt I was in colonial India or the French Riviera and it also has a thread of 1920's Art Deco running through it with wonderful tiled flooring and architectural details. It has so much character and you can feel that it is loved by the owners. If you want to come to the climate of the Algarve but not be stuck in the middle of package tour resort mentality then this is probably what you are looking for.
The whole house is very well equipped, not just with typical holiday home essentials but with everything you really need to make life easy, especially in the kitchen. And all the white goods are good quality brands. And if you have any issues then Mr. Abel will sort you out in a jiffy. So the owners have made it very easy for you to relax and create your holiday vibe. The bathrooms are fully modernised and each room has its own bath and shower. The whole house is kept to a very high standard and it's a bungalow and I love floor level buildings.
Then the ponds and the gardens, well what a joy. From the octagonal courtyard that is the centre of the house to winding paths for you to explore through various levels of abundant exotic flora and fauna, including glorious bougainvillea. And just next to the house a salted swimming pool sandwiched between two freshwater lily ponds teaming with beautiful fish and frogs, all on split level. The layout of the ponds and garden are, just like the house, delivered by someone with a great sense of how spaces interact and feel.
When we arrived I was a little concerned as the drive is just off the main road from Portimau to Monchique. I dont know what it is like in summer but in October it wasn't an issue at all and we didnt hear any road traffic. You are also able to walk to Caldes do Monchique in a few minutes from the house. There are at least 4 restaurants within 5 minutes walk of the house, from smart Spa resort to roadside chicken and chips which all the locals flock to.
Whilst in the house or gardens you can enjoy the hillside setting (sun and shade available all day) and not see any other houses from almost the entire 360 degree perspective so it is very secluded. The drive to Portimau is about 20 minutes. This is a good place to explore the region from, we saw so much of the Algarve which I dont think we would have done if we had been staying on the coast.
Because of the ponds and extensive gardens I would be wary about taking toddler aged children to this property.
