A very pleasant entrance greets you, but the reception and restaurant are both reached by stairs which could be a problem for mobility impaired. I don't think this is stated in the hotel information. Having said that the reception staff are very helpful, especially Vera who sorted out an upgrade to a townhouse, as there was a problem on arrival with our confirmed booking and she also assisted us in booking a Tuk Tour which was great fun.
The townhouse was very well equipped and laid out, with plenty of storage space and hangers. It was all clean light and airy with very efficient air conditioning. The kitchen overlooked the pool area and had both a dish washer and washing machine. I don't think you would have any problems being self catering. There was a personal patio at the rear with large table and 6 chairs plus 2 sun beds and a parasol. Sea view when standing and from upstairs.
The pool is a good size and well maintained with plenty of sunbeds and parasols. There are nice grounds and you can get to the cliff path from the end of the drive. To walk into Carvoeiro it is best to use the road and new walk way. The local beach is a nice walk in the opposite direction.
We were half board which I don't think we would do again. The meals are provided by the Pimenta Preta Restaurant, nice setting over looking the pool from inside the first floor or at the pool bar. The staff are mainly very nice but the service can be quite slow. If you are half board the dinner choice is limited to two items for each course, which worked in the main. Otherwise you have a 25 euro per person allowance to use the full menu. The dishes are very tasty and have some good twists. We liked the fact you can also choose to have lunch instead the menu is good for that too and there are no restrictions. This outdoor area could do with more regular sweeping!
The breakfast was average, with the same choices provided everyday; sliced fruit, fruit salad, yogurt pots, 3 cereals, croissants, cake, cold crepes, custard tarts, toast and jams. Hot food was boiled or fried eggs, scrambled eggs, mushrooms, beans, tomatoes, bacon and sausage; the temperature of these varied from stone cold to very hot depending on your luck.
We thought it was a nice mix of guests from families with pre-school children to retirees and mainly British, Irish and German. Most of the staff spoke multiple languages to some extent, we had no problem with communication.
There is a small gym and sauna on site but we didn't use these.
We don't usually return to the same place but if we did this would be on my list.
Thank you Pestana Palm Gardens for a lovely relaxing stay.
