We arrived early and were shown to a lovely roof terrace with views over the town for drinks. The restaurant was a former jail and is full of character. Food, wine and service were excellent. We were made to feel really welcome from the moment we arrived.

Tuesday night dinner. The restaurante is located within the Castle complex, very well kept and less than 1 minute away, walking, from the Pousada. It has a very nice decoration, especially the bar area in the upper floor. The meal began with 3/4 bread types (which we were offered several times during the meal), olive oil, sprinkled with dried oregano leaves and olives - these composed the 'hors d'oeuvre'. Meanwhile we were served a complimentary amuse bouche: boiled and seasoned baby carrots, very tasty, in a recipe that reminded me of Algarvian-style carrots, and also a tuna or seafood paste that was neither good or bad. Then, the we had, as first courses, açorda (just Google it) and chouriço cooked in local wine. The açorda was tasty, but for me lacked a bit of lemon juice which I could have asked for, but I didn't, so no problem here. The chouriço was perfect. I've never tasted it cooked like that before and I was a bit afraid that the flavours would be unbalanced because of the wine. Nothing of the sort. It was amazing. Then the main courses: roast lamb, and cação (fish) with crushed/smashed potatoes. The roast lamb, a very well known dish of mine, was very tasty and the cação as well, with a special remark regarding the potatoes that were very very good. Both dishes carried the flavours you look for in Alentejo gastronomy, but were contemporaraly presented. We finished with a pudim de água as dessert, which was excellent. For the dessert, we asked only one serving to share, and it was more than enough. The servings were of more than adequate size. Two final notes (and I hope the owner doesn't bash me for the second one - yes, I've read previous replies here - but if he does, no problem): the staff was great - they were kind, attentive, professional and seemed to be happy to perform their work correctly, it was very nice to be served by them and also to chat with the chef who ran into us while we were leaving. Such nice people all of them. On the other hand, I think the drinks (water and wine) were a bit to pricey. I know that drinks are onde of the main income sources of the restaurant industry, but I think they should have more affordable options. Nonetheless, one of the best meals in the past few months. Highly recommended, even if you are using a gift voucher, as I was. [Prices / average - 1st courses: 6-12€, main courses: 17-20€, desserts: 6-7€, still water (25 cL): 2,3€, local wine (375 mL): 7-9€].

Well, it's not everyday that you can enjoy a meal in a 16th century gaol, right?
The place is carefully decorated and the service is pretty much 21st century.
As for the food, you can find traditional dishes carefully prepared and with subtle touches of modern cuisine.
I found it a bit pricey considering the average in Estremoz, but it's ok for a one time experience.
