Last week we had dinner in this world class restaurant while staying over in their small 'hotel' too, which I will review here as well.

We were checked in by the fiendly chef himself, mr. Franky Vanderhaege and escorted to our room. We had the smallest room (only one left when we booked) in front of the house. The room is certainly not big, but very well appointed in a modern style, with a fantastic bed.

We decided to drive to the restaurant, because the hotel is exactly 400 meters away from the restaurant and you have to walk alongside a busy road.

We were welcomed by a friendly member of staff and seated at our table. We asked for the wine list where you can find beautiful wines from all over the world, with a very good range in prices as well to suit everyones budget. We opted for a Santenay Blanc, which was superb. After some lovely amuses we were served a four course dinner, which was divine. In following order we were served: snowcrab with parsnip, radish and pumpkin seeds, fried ray wing with leeks, cockles and octopus, pheasant with a rilette of pork belly and green cabbage and a dessert around the apple. Wow, what a fantastic dinner. The plates were all picture perfect and the taste stunning. The service was excellent too under the supervision of mrs. Sandra Vanderhaeghe: friendly and relaxed.

We slept well in their hotel but have to say that the room in the front of house is a bit noisy with quite some traffic already passing by early in the morning. One comment to make as well: without a cupboard, only two hangers for your clothes is a bit limited.

We ended our visit in the breakfast room where we we served a delicious breakfast: fresh apple and orange juices, great coffee's, lovely fruit plate, cheese and meats to die for, a perfectly cooked scrambled egg and a bread basket with a variety never seen before. Again wow; what a fantastic breakfast!

We have fallen in love with this place: a true gem in all aspects.

Brilliant set menu with intricate and astonishing bits and pieces. Charming attention, particularly la Patronne but wine included in menu was not pleasing. Four glasses of run of the mill wine for sixty euros added on menu for two is not on. Otherwise great. But you pay for it.

Well received and shown to a very nice table by a window looking onto a garden. Did not realise restaurant had 2 Michelin stars until taxi driver said so as he drove us from Ieper to Elverdinge. We reviewed the al a carte and the set menus but opted for the summer special set menu (100 euro incl. service charge) with wines included as there was nothing on the menu which either of us disliked. Superb creative food throughout and very good wines (which were topped up as the waiters decided we need a little more). It was our 46th wedding anniversary dinner and a delight throughout.

Brilliant cooking, the oyster jelly was amazing, we had the 4 course menu (really 8) with accompanying wine flight, water and coffee. All the food was excellent and the wine well chosen

Four years ago I had booked to stay and eat at the Hostellerie Saint Nicolas but had to cancel due to illness. Fortunately on this time we did not have to cancel. Like almost everyone else eating that evening we had the summer menu which was four courses, seven if you add three amuse bouches. In addition an aperitif, three wines and coffee were served for an all inclusive price of 100 Euro. All this was served by friendly staff in a relaxed and informal atmosphere.

The food was delightful to look at and eat, full of flavour and interesting and unexpected tastes. Portion sizes were well judged and evenly paced throughout. My one minor criticism is that we had to wait a rather long time between a couple of the courses while the kitchen seemed to synchronise the course across all the tables. The whole meal took four hours.

We stayed in the rooms attached to the restaurant which are 400m away, Luckily the rain stayed away during our walks there and back. The rooms were very comfortable. However, the best bit of staying there was the breakfast which if breakfast were given Michelin stars would be worth at least two. Fresh fruits, local meats, cheeses, home produced jams, wonderful pastries, and eggs cooked to your request. All beautifully presented. I would go back just for the breakfast.

Glad we made it at last.
