Trying to get away from the overpriced trap of the main square we headed into the side streets. On a narrow deserted street a glow appeared, and approaching the restaurant, the warm atmosphere spilled into the street. Beautifully decorated and lit, we had delicious Tapas, and a few of the fantastic fresh specials, all served by charming staff and owner. Great red wine too. We were the only non-Belgian diners. We had found a lovely piece of the real Ypres.

What a great night! As an addict of the Spanish kitchen ( i worked in Spain a couple of summers, and became a big fan of the Spanish kitchen) we had high expectations! And to be honnest, we got so much more! Good Spanish tapas is a rare find in Belgium. Don't look any further! Tinto de Verano, navajes, !good! patatas bravas, croquetas, jamon and even caragillo con 43, they have it all! And the price was right! What more can we say, we'll come back! Soon!

This is an unassuming spot that serves delicious tapas. We were four people and we ordered the tapas plate for four and the owner selected the options. Three wonderful courses with a great variety of choices. Our server, who we assumed was the owner, was very attentive to any concerns we had as to likes and dislikes and we loved all the selections. As well he is very knowledgeable about the town of Ypres and the history of the area and he took the time to talk to us about the war and the impact on the city. A highly enjoyable evening made all the better because of our charming and well informed host. Four Canadians treated to some local hospitality on our last evening in Ypres

On the day we arrived we called in just for a drink, and to be fair an assessment. We were sat just in the doorway to the left, it’s the type of place you wait to be seated. The owner come over fairly promptly while giving us chance to settle, and asked what he could do for us. Explaining we only wanted to drink he took our order and brought the drinks. After a while we had decided to come back the following night, a Friday, after the Menin Gate ceremony had finished so we booked a table for 8.30, and his helpful manner said ‘if you’re a little late, no problem’.

We duly arrived are again offered a choice of a couple of tables, and after our choice were accompanied to the table and passed the drinks menu. When he took our order he gave us the food menu and relayed the choices on the specials board. We made our menu for the evening with a selection of five tapas, one I found a bit strange to be on a Tapas menu, in that it was Chicken Curry. He helped and confirmed five would be a good number for as we didn’t know portion sizes. I started with the Belgium Black Pudding, being a fan of such fayre, accepting some aren’t. However, it was great, after working our way through the others, it was time to go for the Chicken Curry, and how I was surprised, not thick and gloopy, a texture similar to Chinese style, tasty, slightly hotter. We commended the offering to the owner and he brought the chef in who talked us through the way he cooked it. Next stage is to try and cook it!!
The place has a very next relaxed atmosphere and organised in its delivery and service. Sad to see a previous review not reflecting anything like what we both experienced - aware it’s about opinions and attitudes
