Truly bizarre place that looks like a hoarder's garage. The creepy, random mannequins will haunt your dreams.

Bruges seems to have a museum for everything but the mind boggles for a lamp museum. Fueled lamps, electric and shades. All kinds are here under one roof. And yes anoraks allowed.

That sums it up: a truckload, or even several truckloads of lamps. And to say that not even all lamps were on display, most of them are in the 'lamp-o-theek' - what's in a name...
It focuses rather a lot on the ancient types, while I feel there may be more appeal to modern lamp history and that it wasn't all just Edison, for one thing.
If you like a museum all to yourself, this one is for you. Everyone else is at the chocolate museum.

This museum is a testament to the dedicated collector, the kind who leaves no stone unturned in pursuit of their passion. There is every kind of lamp (as in old oil type, not electric table type) that you can imagine. Examples from many cultures, and a timeline from early oil lamps to ornate table lamps to whale oils lamps. There are thousands and thousands of lamps, some plain and useful, some humorous, and some breathtakingly elaborate.
There is even an exhibition of early light bulbs.
Just a wonderful collection, and so interesting to learn the history of light, and to contemplate how lucky we are with our big glorious modern windows and electric lights that come on at the touch of a button that we no longer have to think about such a basic human need.

If you want to see how men have lightened their homes since the caves until now here you can find all the different types of fires, oil lamps, light bulbs and understand how this important aspect of our daily lives has evolved through time. You can take 1 - 1.5 for a short visit however you need to walk your kids through it as it may not be as attractive to them.
