St. Bavos is an impressive building both inside and outside. It is still used for workship and they don’t allow taking pictures inside. The ceiling seems to be floating above and the stained glass is really intricate and well preserved. The cathedral contains the famous adoration of the lamb triptych painting. Reached after a pleasant stroll from the river, St Bavos is a great place to appreciate the long and interesting history of this beautiful town.

Most who come here will be looking for Van Eyck's Ghent Altarpiece or Adoration of the Mystic Lamb - which I can only guess is stunning from the little I saw of it - half of it being away for restoration and replaced by a poorly printed substitute (there's no note of this - I had to ask). To see the painting, visitors are crammed into a side chapel - many of them at once - all with loud audioguides speaking in a Babel of languages (distributed by the Cathedral) - this is, of course, thoroughly distracting from the tranquil beauty of the art. I'd strongly urge the Cathedral to think about how they might steady the flow of visitors through as I'm not sure anyone had a good time. The rest of the Cathedral is majestic and imposing - tall, strong and sturdy in design with a beautiful vaulted ceiling and works by some notable artists round and about (including Rubens). Bizarrely, during my visit, the skeleton of what i think was a whale hung at the back of the Cathedral and seemed to reference Jonah - I'm not sure if this was part of a temporary community piece or was a more permanent installation by a contemporary artist. Worth a visit anyhow.

When I arrived in Ghent it was too late to see the altarpiece, so I went at 10 am the next day. The altarpiece is in a separate room. It was not crowded at 10 am on a Friday in March. The altarpiece has vibrant colors and incredible detail. It is very moving and well worth a trip to Ghent.

I found the architecture awe-inspiring but even more interesting were the little room extending from the main hallway. Each had exquisite sculptures or paintings. Of course the famous 'Adoration of the Mystic Lamb' resides in this cathedral. It is undergoing restoration but for a small fee it can be viewed by visitors at certain times of the day..
