My family went to Amatsu, expecting that we could eat a genuine Japanese food in Ghent. We ordered a Sushi nigiri and a salmon teishoku, which totaled to be around 50 Euro, but the quality wasn't that great and the quantity was also rather less.

Definitely make a reservation, but Amatsu won't disappoint. We made rez's a few days out, & once we arrived were promptly seated in the back courtyard. It was so lovely, calm, quiet & peaceful back there - a perfect setting for our meal.

Excellent, attentive service. We ordered a la carte, selecting the items that appealed to us, so we got exactly what we wanted, and exactly the flavors we were looking for.

Only drawback could be, as with most Japanese restaurants, this isn't going to be the cheapest dinner of your trip - but for us, flavor was there - and worth the money.

The staff is very friendly and the restaurant oozes a nice cozy and stylish atmosphere. We ordered some starters: sea weed salad and miso soup. Simple and good. For the main course we ordered nigiri: the eel was fabulous. For desert we had ice cream with three flavours: sesame, red bean and green tea. Very creamy and not too sweet. I would like to see this restaurant with high quality chop sticks instead of the cheap disposable chop sticks. This would elevate the restaurant and would give it a more refined experience.

Atmosphere is ok. Waiters are professional. But for me food quality and taste makes the review, so:
we took a sushi menu (the one with nigiri). the nigiri themselves were ok, not spectacularly fresh but at least with some less banal kinds of fish (though one with surf shell clam had some sand creaks).
Everything else was actually bad. Starting with a entre algae, eggplant and a very bad "caramelized" small octopus. A sider of pickles (bad) and some undefined sweetish vegetable (also bad). Miso soup was good. Green tea ice cream has always the same taste even in cheap chinese restaurants.
With half bottle of wine we paid more than 100 euros. Frankly I really don't understand all the hype about the place. (Michelin suggestion??? Mah)
Bottom line: if you have a truly fresh fish, anyone, just boil it and it will taste superb. If you have an old octopus it's not gonna taste any good even if you caramelize it.
