Near the end of my European vacation, I sought a nice place to stay within a short commute to Schiphol, the airport near Amsterdam. Leiden looked about right; not a large city, but beautiful Holland. I found Ex Libris merely by walking down the natural route from the station and by looking for a nice little hotel near the museums I saw. This area just felt right for some reason. I peaked down a small street to my left, saw a hotel sign, and rang the bell. Soon I was warmly greeted by the proprietor. I asked if I might be able to stay that night and was offered a choice of two rooms. This was just perfect! I love old buildings. I ascended the spiral staircase and was delighted by the room on the top floor. I'm 6' 8", so I like to have a little extra space. Every wall, window, fixture, tile, rug, etc had been thoughtfully selected and was in perfect order. I'd stumbled upon a new privately built little Dutch treasure; The owner had just rebuilt this hotel from the old university bookstore, and wow did he ever do a great job. He'd used a local architect and craftsmen, and had overseen the work himself; That was apparent and perfect! He helped me learn that in the 1600s, my Pilgrim forefathers were from the Pieterskerk church just up 'our' narrow street. (Then I realized why that hymn I'd heard playing from the bells outside had been so familiar to me.:-)) He pointed out the lovely university botanical gardens, the quaint restaurants on the block, etc. He cares and wants you to enjoy your stay. He's a great conversationalist if you'd like to talk, or not. Also cooks great breakfasts! See if you can stay here(!) - and enjoy it as I sure did! Book in advance; I got very lucky!!

Room Tip: The whole hotel is wonderful; just pick one. Pricing is reasonable and doesn't vary much by room.

This is a beautiful boutique hotel just steps away from the Hortus Botanicus. It is brand spanking new (just opened Oct 2017) and it has been furnished with great taste and character. Delicious breakfasts! Owner is very friendly and helpful. I was lucky to stumble upon this place.

Room Tip: Room #5, on top of the property, is particularly nice.
