My husband and I have stayed in some very nice hotels over the years (Four Seasons, Ritz Carlton, the Cavalieri in Rome, etc.), but the Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam surpassed them all. It started when we made our reservations and immediately received a 4-page questionnaire asking how our stay could be made more enjoyable. When we arrived, the entire staff was extremely friendly, welcoming, and attentive to our needs. Paula, who received us, offered delicious chocolate, drinks, warm towels for our cold hands, and a short tour detailing the hotel's interesting history. The doorman provided expert assistance with our luggage and was helpful in offering umbrellas on the day it rained. Nathaniel, our concierge, had already procured tickets to several museums for us and arranged for changed entry times when Amsterdam instituted a 5 p.m. closing time. He also arranged for the shipment of an item we bought on our trip and helped us locate a nearby (and inexpensive) testing site for covid, as required by the U.S. government. Breakfast in the restaurant was amazing and delicious, with very attentive service. Our room was upgraded (due to our Hilton Diamond status) and it was huge and wonderfully appointed, looking out over a beautiful canal. The bed and bedding were very comfortable and the luxurious robe was one I wish I could have taken home with me! Because shops and restaurants were closed after 5 p.m. due to city regulations, we spent more time in our room than usual and enjoyed delicious room service, as well as a "welcome amenity" (a beautiful chocolate Christmas tree), a delicious berry tart to help us celebrate an anniversary, a plate of complimentary macarons to "atone" for a minor inconvenience we experienced, a keepsake sample of the fragrance we had chosen for room turndown service, and a package of cookies to enjoy on our trip home. We were truly impressed with the amazing service and can completely understand why the Waldorf Astoria is rated #1 in Amsterdam.
