Beautiful museum featuring mainly Dutch works of art, including the masterpieces Night Watch by Rembrandt and The Milkmaid by Vermeer. Well worth a visit. Book tickets in advance to avoid the queues!

It's great to be able to experience a visit here after refurbishment. The museum is a treat to walk around, very well laid out, maps are clear and available in lots of different languages. Staff are very helpful and happy to guide visitors around.
It can get very crowded, so best visited in the morning or a couple of hours before closing.

Very well organized. Come with your smartphone a good set of speakers, download the app, and save 5 Euro (the cost for the same audiobook on the Museum audio set). If either children , the highlight track is sufficient, to get a good sense of the museum. It is certainly a must see in Amsterdam . Children below 18 are free.

By the time we arrived it was two hours before closing. We figured that'd be more than enough time to see the highlights and be on our way. Our attitude was more Rijksmuseum:check than Rijksmuseum:oboycan'twait. We knew there'd be Rembrandt, et al., and crowds and a gift shop. We were in Amsterdam; we were dutiful.

The game changer was the free Rijksmuseum phone app. Not only does it point out things you might miss (oh! the symbolism! the shadowy figures! the period gossip!) but it provides historical context for the art in a completely accessible style. We started with the recommended highlights, but double-backed to catch things not on the highlights route. We left when they closed, but we could've stayed another two hours.
