Great museum, buy your tickets in advance to avoid lines. Super crowed and they close spot on 5:00 pm.
Stop to listen to street musicians after

Very well organized. Come with your smartphone a good set of speakers, download the app, and save 5 Euro (the cost for the same audiobook on the Museum audio set). If either children , the highlight track is sufficient, to get a good sense of the museum. It is certainly a must see in Amsterdam . Children below 18 are free.

By the time we arrived it was two hours before closing. We figured that'd be more than enough time to see the highlights and be on our way. Our attitude was more Rijksmuseum:check than Rijksmuseum:oboycan'twait. We knew there'd be Rembrandt, et al., and crowds and a gift shop. We were in Amsterdam; we were dutiful.

The game changer was the free Rijksmuseum phone app. Not only does it point out things you might miss (oh! the symbolism! the shadowy figures! the period gossip!) but it provides historical context for the art in a completely accessible style. We started with the recommended highlights, but double-backed to catch things not on the highlights route. We left when they closed, but we could've stayed another two hours.

Van Gogh museum was my first choice so went to see this as tickets to Van Gogh were sold out (did manage it later though). Not a fan of this type of art even though this museum showcased a lot of work by the old masters. But it's a popular museum judging by the number of people inside.

Standing face to face with some of the paintings that accompany you since childhood can be a very special experience. In reality these painting look much better than in the coffee table albums.
We may have been lucky but even at the most famous paintings there was not a big crowd and we could get close to the canvas.
