My husband and I enjoyed this museum very much. The art exhibition was delightful and gave us a greater understanding of the history of this city. We also enjoyed the permanent exhibition.

This museum gets it. How do we present contemporary art? Just go here and see. But all tte old masters are shown too. I saw the Ilja Repin a long time ago. This was by far the best exhibtions I saw to this day(followed by Holbein in Mauritshuis)

The main interest for me was the collection of modern art, which was very thin indeed. Museum is an ugly concrete building opposite the central station. Only intersting thing about the museum was the empty exhibition space on the 3rd floor.

This was the most stimulating, interesting, informative and varied museum visit I have experienced in a long time. There are beautiful contemporary objects by Ettore Sottsass and the Memphis group, and a range of classical paintings from the 15th to 19th century such as Lucas Cranach and Michael Sweerts. The exhibition I enjoyed the most was Hide & Seek by Maarten Baas. He creates such a startling and captivating range from a circus room that provokes dance and laughter to clocks apparently with people inside drawing the time to hundred year tree projects. Discovering the small exhibition of the Avant-Garde De Ploeg artists was a revelation and a great pleasure. The building is post-modernist with three main pavilions designed individually by architects Philippe Starck, Alessandro Mendini, Coop Himmelb(l)au. The day spent there was a complete delight.

I enjoyed both the interesting permanent art collection of Groninger Museum and the temporary expo(until 6may 2018),a large exhibition on the Romantic School of painting(1800-1850).

The exhibition"De Romantiek in het Noorden" features works by famous 19th century artists like J.M.W Turner,John Constable,Caspar David Friedrich and Christian Dahl.

I also enjoyed the paintings by lesser known artists like Jens Juel,Andreas Achenbach,Barend Cornelis Koekoek andThomas Fearnly.
The Romantic period in fine arts was between 1800-1850 and was a reaction to the rationalistic period of the enlightment in the 18th century.

The masterpieces of the permanent collection include works by Van Gogh,Paul Gaugain,Mesdag,Rembrandt and painter of "De Ploeg"school of painting.

Finally there is an extensive collection of Oriental ceramics from the 17th and 18th century.
