Good museum what takes you back to the time of the Nederlands Indië and the time of the KNIL (Koninklijk Nederlands Indië Leger). Learn about the Dutch history in Indonesia.

Museums on the subject of the colonialism of Dutch East Indies, AKA Indonesia, is somewhat a complicated design with the possiblity of being rife with subjectivity and propaganda. You can easily see this in numerous history museums in Indonesia and the Netherlands. This is where Bronbeek Museum stands out amongst the other of its kinds for offering an objective view of three centuries history between the two nations. The exhibit, especially the war exhibit, is presented from the two points of view: Dutch and Indonesian. This presentation gives a unique spin to the museum as it provides a contrast how one event is perceived by one side and by the other. A good cause for one side is a disaster for the other. It also provides the contemporary situation of people who found themselves standing on two sides thus providing insight not only to the past but also to the present and future as well. Bronbeek Museum also functions as an elderly home for the Dutch veterans who were stationed in Indonesia. Maybe if you're lucky, you can sit down with them and hear the stories from themselves. As on the more practical side, it means this museum is easily navigable for people with limitation on their mobility. The location of the museum itself is also easily accesible with Bus number 1 from Arnhem Central Station towards Velp and you can get down in at Bronbeek. Surrounding the museum is a nice tranquil garden. Visiting this place is not only a treat for history lovers but also for people looking for a nice quiet time either for contemplation or just a nice way to spend an afternoon.

Excellent museum - well laid out, well presented and loads of information - brings a deeper understanding to the various factors in the development of WWII. Very very interesting. The restaurant on the grounds is phenomenal! Excellent 'rijst tafel' - better than any rice table in Amsterdam by far!!

Knew of its existence for years and finally managed to visit and very glad of it. It’s a beautiful estate, and a home for the military of old, mainly from the former Dutch East Indies Army, and the museum telling the history of same is very well laid out and very very informative; well worth a visit for those who are interested in that period of history, or for everybody really :-)
