A superb place in summer for the little kids and you'll see Asian tourists in skimpy briefs cavorting amongst the jets of water coming out of the ground - gush, gush, gush, giggles of glee.

However, it's pretty boring after that. Often get an event going on such as a big ice-rink in winter, but I'd be put off by the calibre of people watching, observing and commenting on others - weird. they often have a habit of staring at you too.

Thank Spekka

Ok, it's the biggest square in the heart of Bern. So you when you are there, you get the feeling of space and you are able to look at the federal Buildings' facade from a distance. This was the main reason, why at the very beginning of the 20th century, a couple of buildings had to be destroyed for it. So the new built Federal Building could be seen.
Ok, you will see a light curve in the grey gneiss wich some people may find exciting, and of course a "fountain" with 24? water nozzles, like you probably have seen before on Victoria Peak, Hongkong. But in Bern you can ran through the fountain and get pretty wet. On warm summer days, this is exciting for children and of course THE SUBJECT for the cameras of their parents.
I wonder why this square won a prize from the US-Architects AIA. I can only guess, they would probably give a price to a clear blue sky too. The square ist gray, and bald. You could think, they still left the space they needed 100 years ago for construction equipment or stones for the buildings around. But soon they will probably do something inventive with this gray plain. No tree, no bench to sit and stay on it and watch e.g. your or others' children play with the water from the nozzles of the fountain. You have to stand or sit on the grey gneiss. That may be fine for younger people, but e.g. for grandmas/-pas with their grand-children, it must be less fun. Some say there are no benches because of unwanted people like e.g. homeless.
With it's emptyness you can argue that it's a "multipurpose" space: on Tuesday and Saturday Mornings there is the local market on it. But from my point of view, the market would be nicer, with some trees. On many days there are events on it -even very commercial ones.
When I was a child, the "Bundesplatz" was a parking space for cars. So compared to this use, it's getting better. I live in Bern, and I never go to the Bundesplatz just to meet someone there or to stay there for a while. And to me that would be still a main function of a square in a town. Am I old fashioned?

This is one of Bern's main attraction, it means Federal Square in English. This central plaza is lively and busy specially in summer where you can see kids and kids at heart playing at the water fountain guns around. There are plenty of cafes and restaurant around to chill, relax and enjoy the scene.

The Bundesplatz is the beating heart of Bern and of Switzerland, and the adjacent Baerenplatz has a very nice open air market - the buildings surrounding the Bundesplatz are serious, especially the Swiss National ank building (currently under restauration - no worries, the Swiss franc stays strong as ever!).
