“Spectacular Views”
Review of Piazza Grande

Piazza Grande

From the Piazza Grande you have a wonderful perspective of the valley in which Gubbio lies. If you're fortunate to be in Gubbio in Mid May you simply must try to witness the Festa dei Ceri which is truly incredible. You will never experience anything like being in the piazza when the event starts!!!!

Lot of fun with 2 to a 'cage' for the trip up the mountain. Great views at the top and the Basilica is very worthwhile. However be warned the ride down closes for lunch at 1.15pm and opens again at 2.30pm. We arrived at 1.15pm and a few seconds. You guessed it we had to wait the 1 hour 15 minutes for the ride down but the view was brilliant

You can either walk up or take the lift, I prefer to take the lift up and walk down. It is a large square with many important buildings surrounding the square. The Palazzo dei Consoli is a large gothic building with a fan shaped staircase leading up to the main doors. Looking over the edge you get amazing views of the Umbrian country side. This is also where you can pick up the Gubbio Express. This little train takes you through the streets of Gubbio and into the history of the town. It is 40 minutes long and 7 km, 62 points of interest are described by the audio video guide. The price for adults is 8 Euros, kids under 10 5 euros.

Take the public lift to reach the Piazza Grande and be awestruck by the view across the rooftops and out into the nearby countryside. Take your camera!

When you take your first trip around Gubbio this is the place to start. Tip 1 rather than climb it take the lift up and walk down. Tip 2 from the Piazza take the Gubbio Express for a trip around the town. This gives you the ideal opportunity to get a trip round the whole town get your bearings and saves wondering around aimlessly trying to find places of interest. Once you have done the tour it is much easier to find your way back to the places you want to see again in more detail. It is 8 euros pp well spent. Tip 3 many of the shops around the Piazza itself are for the tourist with all selling more or less the same things for similar prices, a bit like Blackpool et al. After you have taken in the stunning views take a leisurely stroll back down the hill where there are a number of shops and cafes worth visiting. Tip 4 if you like ice cream then don't miss the one on the right hand almost at the bottom of the hill. Don't worry if you can't make up your mind from the choices on display the owner will let you sample them before you decide. Then sit outside and watch the world go by and enjoy the ice cream!
