Full Day Tour from Rome to Gubbio: The biggest...
Ranked #1 of 76 things to do in Gubbio
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 9 October 2017

When you take your first trip around Gubbio this is the place to start. Tip 1 rather than climb it take the lift up and walk down. Tip 2 from the Piazza take the Gubbio Express for a trip around the town. This gives you the ideal opportunity to get a trip round the whole town get your bearings and saves wondering around aimlessly trying to find places of interest. Once you have done the tour it is much easier to find your way back to the places you want to see again in more detail. It is 8 euros pp well spent. Tip 3 many of the shops around the Piazza itself are for the tourist with all selling more or less the same things for similar prices, a bit like Blackpool et al. After you have taken in the stunning views take a leisurely stroll back down the hill where there are a number of shops and cafes worth visiting. Tip 4 if you like ice cream then don't miss the one on the right hand almost at the bottom of the hill. Don't worry if you can't make up your mind from the choices on display the owner will let you sample them before you decide. Then sit outside and watch the world go by and enjoy the ice cream!

Piazza Grande is the main focal point of Gubbio. During the Festa dei Ceri each May 15th, the plaza is filled with thousands of people for one of the most amazing and chaotic Umbrian events of the year. It's a place that gives one a sense of history and pre-christian religion, but on a quite day, when the plaza is empty, you can get a sense that the ancient people who settled present-day Gubbio knew that this spot was the perfect place for a city. Looking down at the city and across the valley from the plaza is a wonderful experience.

This building should be on your tick box section. Lots to see and admire. Within walking distance from our hotel. Worth a visit.
