If you are thinking of staying in Umbria, this is the place to stay.

We are travelling more slowly than most, and were fortunate to stay for 15 nights at La Cuccagna, 6 nights in the B&B section, and 9 in the self catered cottage. Whether you are able to stay one night, a few, or many, this offers everything you need for a great stay in Umbria.

The location, on a minor road high up in the hills between Perugia and Gubbio, is spectacular. It is only 10-15 minutes drive to the major road to Perugia (which all up is about 20-25 minutes drive), and it is about 20 minutes drive the other direction to Gubbio. But La Cuccagna offers peace and quiet, spectacular views (great sunsets) in a lovely Umbrian rural setting. A choice of excellent restaurants are only a few minutes drive away.

The facilities are great. In the B&B section there are four spacious ensuite rooms, a central dining and kitchen area, a covered terrace allowing outdoor dining in warmer months, and a spectacular infinity swimming pool. There is a small bar area offering wine, soft drinks and spirits, and snacks, which operates on an honesty system.

The self contained cottage has a small kitchen/dining area (but enough room for two people) and an ensuite double bedroom. It also has an outdoor dining area, a small barbeque (which we used often) and a hammock! Guests in the self contained cottage can also access the common areas of the B&B part, where wifi is available.

The hosts, Sarah and Sal, are truly great people, completely dedicated to making your stay memorable. Both have loads of advice about where to go and what to do, and are very friendly and helpful. For us, they made a really good visit, great.

La Cuccagna is centrally situated. While there we had a number of day trips - to Gubbio, Assisi, Urbino, Siena, Todi, Deruta and other medieval hill towns, all rich in history. We were fortunate to be there on 15 May and see the spectacular medieval Festival of the Ceri (giant wooden candles).

We also visited the large freshwater lake near Cortona, went bush walking at Monte Cucco national park near Sigili (breathtaking views - we could see the Adriatic Sea to the east, and the Sybilline Mountains to the south, but we did have a very clear day), and even drove to Florence and back (although that is quite a long drive, over 2 hours each way). And after all that, we had a few quiet days, when we stayed at La Cuccagna and read, wrote postcards, and went for walks along the roadway (which has very light traffic, and where you are rewarded with spectacular views).

We were also able to enjoy Sal's famous pizza night (cooked in his brick oven) and pasta night, where he taught us to make pasta and then cooked us a terrific dinner!

We were fortunate to meet some lovely guests while there - a group of friends from the USA and the UK, who were very friendly. We had a few great nights together, and will now stay in touch.

So, all up - great hosts, great area, great value, great B&B. Go there!

From the moment we arrived as a party of 6, Salvatore and Sarah were warm and welcoming. Since it was our first journey to Italy, it was very nice to have proprietors that spoke English. They were gracious and accommodating, helping us to navigate the beautiful country side. The rooms were lovely, clean and of good size. Beds were so comfortable we awoke each morning for a fresh start to climb the steep hills of the little villages of Umbria and Tuscany. Pizza night is a treat not to miss, stay in one night, Salvatore makes his pizza in an outside brick oven. I could go on an on about this wonderful place but before I go, I would also like to make mention that being a Bed and Breakfast owner as well, I am probably a bit more cynical than most, La Cuccagna passed with flying colors!!! An Excellent choice for a true Umbria experience! Many thanks Sarah and Salvatore (and a special hug for their darling daughter, Rosa)

We first visited, when Sal and Sarah started their first year, and both my wife and myself have never forgotten it.We had 3 free days after visiting Florence, and asked if they could put us up for 2 nights it was almost as if we had only left yesterday, the welcome was overwhelming, and then to see all the extra work they have put in, was amazing. The first visit, we stayed in the "Cowshed" which they are now just finishing of refurbishing, however the ensuite rooms are all you ask for, and a terrace with views out of this world. One full day is not the way to enjoy the region, as there are so many attractions but we did fit in one mountain and Gubbio. Next year we will try and make it longer, many thanks Sal, Sarah and of course Rosa

Room Tip: Nearest the terrace

My wife and I went to Italy for 2 weeks for our delayed honeymoon(Sept 2011). We spent almost a week at La Cuccagna and it was one of the best experiences I have ever had on vacation. We were looking for that idyllic, stereotypical, Italian country scene. We got it and thensome. Sarah & Salvatore really went out of their way to make every experience as pleasurable and stress free as possible. The rooms were big and comfy, the pool was amazing, and the views were truly breathtaking. In the morning we were treated to home made breakfast with figs picked that morning. The scent of wild lavender permeates through the air. Salvatore gave a pasta making class, and the coup de grace, for us, was the pizza night. Salvatore has an outdoor brick oven, and that night we sat out on the veranda watching the most gorgeous sunset ever with 4 other couples, eating for about 4 hours. Pizza, pasta, salads, dessert, wine, incredible . Salvatore also explained to us that La Cuccagna is the name for the peasant's heaven. Their version of heaven is sitting with good friends, and eating and laughing all night. that's exactly what we had.

A rental car is absolutely necessary though to get there. there is NO public transport, but you'll be happy you had a car. The countryside is dotted with gorgeous medieval towns and fantastic little restaurants.

La Cuccagna is a lovely place, where you can experience the real Italian countryside. Sarah and Salvatore are very friendly and helpfull hosts. Their knowledge about the region of Umbria and their excellent cookingskills made our stay unforgettable. The house is situated in the hills and has an panoramic view over the valley. When you take a walk, you will pass sunflowers, olive trees and vineyards. The towns of Gubbio and Perugia are lovely to visit with their historical centres. Thanx to Sarah and Salvatore we saw the highlight and best spots of the towns. But the site of La Cuccagna offers more than enough. The smell of lavender and rosemary leads you to the swimmingpool with deckchairs. Even though the hammocks are very comforting. The stay was grandiose and we will definitly back again!
