We stayed here in July 2018.

The rooms were great, amazing views into the valley. The staff were very helpful as well. I left my passport in the room, and Pablo and Daniella arranged to drop it off for me in the hotel I was staying at in a nearby town - amazing service.

The one big asset for this hotel is its view, which is superb, provided you get a room facing the valley. However, otherwise we couldn’t believe this hotel was so well-rated.
The attitude of reception, one’s first contact with the hotel on arrival, left a lot to be desired. Tired after a long journey, we were first bombarded with lots of information which was hard to take in. With one exception, their approach was functional and uncaring, leaving the feeling that they would just do what they had to and nothing more.

We thought the hotel was tired and in need of a refresh and a refit. The room was a bit dated and overlit with gadgets for poor sleepers. The carpet felt grubby under foot. The clothes storage space for our week’s stay was inadequate, although probably enough for the short stays that many visitors to Assisi might have. The bathroom was small, although reasonably well-equipped. The tight shower positioning in the bath was such that it could drench the floor and bathmat if you weren’t very careful, and access to it would be difficult for a less agile person. Like many buildings in the old town, the hotel is on a number of floors and a lift is essential if you are at the top. However, the lift was very slow, as was the internet connection in the room. The air-con is controlled from reception and because it was noisy we chose not to use it. That would be an issue for people in much warmer weather.

The hotel’s restaurant in the evening was unexceptional and seemed pricey for what was on offer. The wine by the glass was meagre and we had a very disappointing main course cod dish; small and over cooked. We ate out every evening after that, in the many very good, friendly and well-run restaurants that Assisi has to offer. Breakfast in a characterful and atmospheric vaulted basement was better, served by a delightful waitress who was very helpful, and in huge contrast to the hotel’s reception.

While the hotel is very central and would suit people coming by coach, if you have a car, then think carefully. Parking is a real problem for the visitor. In general parking is restricted to residents since this lovely medieval town has very narrow streets, and there is only space for a few cars in front of the hotel at 12€ a day, on a first-come-first-served basis and access involves one-way streets. Otherwise you get parking in a public car park 10mins walk away, downhill, at the same rate. Finding the hotel by car if you are new to Assisi was not easy, not so good after a long journey!

Room tip: Go for a room with a valley view. Street-side could be noisy as cars pass going uphill in low gears.

If you are reading this review, you already know that the Fontebella Hotel is located in the picturesque and memorable hillside town of Assisi. The Fontebella is a very nice hotel, with great rooms overlooking the countryside, reasonably spacious rooms, a great restaurant, and a really nice included breakfast each day. The downside is that it is quite a hike from the bus stop, especially if you are toting luggage (and who isn't?). This is curable if you opt for a taxi from the train station, which on reflection I think I would suggest. My wife and I both enjoyed this hotel, and it was by far the nicest property we stayed at on our recent trip to Italy (we stayed in five hotels along the way). I think committing to this hotel would be a decision one would not regret.

My room had gorgeous view with church bells ringing. My room's decor was also prettier than pictured in this photo. Breakfast was good and the dining room for lunch was fantastic. Food and view was molto bene! The staff friendly and accomodating. I love Assisi. Hope to go back some day.

Really lovely hotel! We are in a standard double, it's a comfortable spacious room with a lovely view. Bathroom is clean and has space for toiletries. Breakfast buffet has hot and cold options - eggs, cereal, pastries etc and fresh fruit. Can walk to everything in the old town. Pablo checked us in, he was very friendly and helpful, we feel right at home. Very peaceful hotel. Beds are comfortable but a little on the soft side. Highly recommend this lovely hotel.
