A very beautiful location just few minutes away from the main cities.
Could be indicated for an appetizer or quick promenade.

Our hotel (Chiusarelli) was quite close to this 16th century fort (also known as Fortezza Medicea/Medici Fortress) and the first thing we did upon our arrival in SIena was to come up here to have a picnic lunch of Tuscan cheeses, crackers and wine that we bought at the nearby Conad Supermarket (located in Piazza Matteotti). You can't beat the view, the seating on ancient stones, the breeze was just right, and the post-picnic walk on and view from the fort's wall's made this a perfect welcome to historic Siena. By the way, if you have time, pop into the ground floor Jazz Association area and try to catch some great beats there.

We visited the Fortezza di Santa Barbara on our last morning in Siena as we had a couple of hours to spare before our train. You can walk round the full perimeter of the fort which has plenty of shade under the large trees, lots of rose bushes and benches to relax. The perfect spot for a leisurely walk. It was full of locals relaxing, jogging, taking a morning stroll. There are great views of the town of Siena with the Duomo rising up, and the surrounding countryside. Very peaceful, free entry. Worth visiting if you have a couple of days in Siena and you have seen most of the main sites in the centre.

Not only the views of the city are awesome, but it is a great place for some people watching. Lots of runners and walkers around the walls. There is an assortment of excersice equipment available for those who want to work out a bit - maybe work off a little of that pasta! But the best views are of the lovers on the benches. Get a room!!!

If you have time in Siena, the fortezza isn't a priority to see but is cool. Today it is a walking path with exercise equipment and nice views of the area. When I lived in Siena this was my gym! The fortezza is from the 1400-1500s, built by the Medici to defend Siena when it was a city-state.
