The Palazzo Pubbblico is the main building fronting one side of Il Campo. It is where the horses emerge from for the Palio race. The Piazza del Mercato is a relatively small piazza located slightly downhill and behind the Palazzo Pubblico, the latter building forming one side of the piazza. On the two adjoining sides there are more, less attractive buildings, some restaurants and on the opposite side, where there are no buildings, there is a view of the countryside.

In the middle of the piazza there is a turtle shaped "loggia", a covered area with open sides.

There is an antique market held here on one Sunday a month. We have not seen any other markets. In fact, on most occasions we have walked past here it has just been a car park.

As the name suggests Piazza del Mercato is a market place but it's open only certain days of the week. The piazza is located right behind the Palazzo Pubblico so its rear facade forms one side of the piazza. The center of it is occupied by an oval-shaped loggia called Tartarugone (Big Turtle) as its roof reminds of a turtle's shell. There is a good restaurant there named Antica Trattoria Papei.

We walked down from IL Campo area after visiting the Museo Civico (Civic Museum). On a Saturday - local flea market and collectibles. I found a sterling silver bracelet also loads of costume jewelry. There is parking adjacent. go to the low wall behind parking great views.. a photo stop then on to other sights - could also sit on wall and have a snack and recharge yourself for more walking the lanes of Siena...

The Piazza del Mercato is just behind the Piazza del Campo on the back of the City Hall. I would advice the Antica Trattoria Papei for a good lunch or dinner. And if you want some lovely street food you should try one of the delicious panini from Gino Cacino Alimentari. Do not forget the glass of wine!!
