From the outside this church looks like it will be rather plain inside so we were literally shocked when we walked inside and the saw the amazing frescoes and beautiful marbles. My partner's jaw literally dropped when he walked inside and saw the beauty of the interior. The altar area is gorgeous and the little chapels are so beautiful. If you are in San Gimignano you must visit La Collegiata. We were amazed at the beauty of this place.

it's a small town by today's standard and the church with its magnificent interior has a very special charm. We visited it after The more famous Duomos in Florence and Siena, but still were quite impressed. Make sure to see Fina.s chapel and then walk to her house located within 5 min walk

The frescoes in the Duomo are in excellent condition for the most part and represent a really intriguing insight into late medieval/early renaissance art, when the emphasis was clearly placed on story telling for a population that would have included many people who could not read. Here are laid out the principal stories of the Old Testament along one wall of the nave, and the main events in the life and death of Jesus of Nazareth along the other. And there is also a graphic and gruesome Last Judgment near the entrance. If you can't get to the Sistine Chapel to see how Michelangelo treated the Last Judgment theme, pop into the Collegiata di San Gimignano.

We had to buy tickets to get into both the museum and the cathedral, but the cost was worth it.

Some of the best preserved frescoesvI have seen. The best part is that they remain an intact set, with Old Testament and New Testament images. The medievals had an extaordinary ability to portray comlex theological ideas in art. A beautiful and contemplative place. San Gimignano is worth the trip just to see the interior of his church.

The duomo itself doesn't have a lot of appeal from the outside but the steps leading into the church are a popular meeting and resting spot in one of the main piazza's inside the walls of San Gimignano. Once inside the church you will be amazed with the interior decor, the informative signage and heaps and heaps of fresco's. Amazing.
