Owner description: Destined to remain concealed beneath the finished work, the precious “sinopia” is the only graphic work that we still have of the early masters, for drawings on paper or parchment that have survived from way back in the Middle Ages are extremely rare. As the first step towards making a fresco, the sinopia is a drawing traced out on the first layer of plaster. It takes its name from “sinoper” or “sinopia”, the red pigment which is mixed with water and applied by brush. The Pisa collection is absolutely unique and it came to light as the result of a terrible event. A fire raged through the Camposanto during a bombing raid in the Second World War and this made it necessary to detach the frescoes from the plaster in order to save vast portions that had not been burnt, and to restore them. The outer film of paint was removed using the “strappo” technique, revealing the hidden sinopias beneath.

Quite a lot of information given on how frescoes were actually painted. On display were beautiful outline of paintings made with red earth. Looked so exquisite. A must visit place to gain an understanding of the creation of frescoes.

Didn't make it past the entrance with the staff. First staff member, a man, was so dismissive and laughed in our faces went to a woman who decided her computer screen was far more important that us to look at and never even glanced up. She was blunt and rude and in the end I went to the woman at the entrance to the museum start to tell her how utterly disgusted I was with the staff and their extreme rudeness and walked out. I would never go back

In order to enter the amazing buildings that surround the leaning tower of Pisa you will need to visit the museum to obtain a (free) ticket.

We attempted this on two separate days without success (too late and too busy). Which was frustrating but not a major issue.

The customer service of the people behind the counter was however disgusting, literally comically bad. (The people behind us sniggered by the shocking interaction and responses given by the employees there).

My advice is go early, be prepared for a rude response, get in and get out!!! If you do want to spend some time there, the video explaining the origin and history of the tower is quite interesting, however it’s probably easier to hear if you watch it on YouTube.

We visited the Museo delle Sinopie last, after having visited the Leaning Tower, Cathedral, Baptistery and the cemetery. If we are honest, this to us, was a bit uninteresting as it is not really our thing.
The reason we visited is because we purchased tickets for all the other attractions at home, this one also popped up in the list, we therefore thought that it must be fairly good, and that is the only reason we visited.
We also appreciate that everyone is different and has different likes, and If you are right into history and frescoes then this museum will probably appeal.
For us, the film show about the leaning tower, and the model of Piazza dei Miracoli were more interesting.

The most uninteresting runaround of a museum ever. Very specialist and narrow subject where half of the exhibition is about how the fresco sketches were saved and the rest a pointless display unless you are an academic specialising in the field. Only good point is air con to cool down after having visited all the other great exhibits in the area.
