Great variety of restaurants to choose from for food and drinks. Often there are special events set up in the Piazza. Wonderful place to stroll around, view the activities, lovely little shops to browse in. Love it

As many have noted, this was originally an amphitheater, but now consists of residences, restaurants, and shops. The arched tunnel/walkway leading into the center "arena" area was very interesting. I wasn't expecting the open area lined with shops and apartments. I was thinking it would be...well... an arena like other ancient arenas I have seen. It is definitely worth the time to walk through.

It is in the shape of the theatre it once was, but other than that, it just is a touristy plaza filled with shops and restaurants now. It is hard to envision its former self.

A very knowledgeable guide walked us through the Piazza Anfiteatro, once an ancient Roman amphitheater for entertainment in the walled city of Lucca, Italy. She pointed out that 8-9 feet below our feet lay the relics of the original piazza. It is elliptical in shape and serves as the center of the city's life now. From the beautiful and multiple balconies, we saw signs of ordinary life - flowers, hanging laundry, people sitting and watching the people in the square below them. Restaurants and shops lined the plaza, in front of the many arches. In areas at the back, building owners had honored the original architecture by exposing some of the original stones of the structure.
This would be a good place to people watch in one of the cafes or just meander through the shops.
