The Piazza Della Santissima Annunziata is quite large but very quiet. There is a strange "peace" when you walk along this area. There are no shops or restaurants to speak of and looks quite unkempt and not terribly clean, at least that is the impression we got on our visit there last May. We only passed by once but our impression was not very good and not memorable either.

This square is quite nice, more quiet than others. Also because there is no restaurants on the piazza. But there is a church, the church of the Annunziata, therefore the name of the piazza. In the middle the Equestrian Monument of Ferdinando I. This is a bronze equestrian statue erected in 1608. You'll also find two smaller fountains here. One interesting detail is over the columns making the arches of the front of Ospedale degli Innocenti (Hospital of the Innocents). There you'll see images of babies in swaddling clothes. Interesting details.

We found this one by accident whilst wandering aimlessly from the bigger tourist ticket items by the river to our hotel and were immediately entranced. What should have taken us two minutes to walk across occupied significantly longer.
Flanked on three sides by porticoes, the main building to see is the Basilica della Santissima Annunziata. Totally understated from the outside, inside it is a gem of a church where the fairly dark interior hides some wonderful pieces of art. On the east side of the square is the interesting façade of the Spedale degli Innocenti, the first orphanage built in Europe by Brunelleschi in 1419 and on the other side is Palazzo Grifoni dating back to the 1100’s. Then in the middle is the obligatory statue of man on horse, or in this case Ferdinando I de' Medici by Giambologna.
Probably not a must see to do over the top of some of the other attractions of Florence, but if your hotel is in the area or you are visiting the Accademia then take time to visit here.
