Walk through this Piazza anytime of the day and you will see the artists, musicians, jugglers and people strolling around. There are large Bistros that are open late into the night. There is live music on this square at most times. The food in 3 of the 6 restaurants was very mediocre. However we did enjoy the fresh food market on a saturday afternoon. The home made Cantuccini was the best we found. it is hard to be in Florence and miss this central piazza.

I stumbled upon this beautiful round plaza, as my fiance and I were just walking on the way to the train station. We weren't planning on stopping by but we did stop by just to take some photos, walked around the plaza and experience the ambiance. I will upload some photos soon.

To me this piazza is a mixture of worlds. From the calliope horse carousel to the wagon vendors selling itallian leather goods and tourist trinkets to the open air resturant tables, they provide a felling of new and make it an energetic place to visit.

At the same time, there is a column in the piazza near the edge with a stature on top. This column marks the location of the original crossroads when this was a roman ruled city. This location has been a functional part of the city for over 700 years and has gone through a few renovations. But the age and feel of the place is something you have to experience.

Look for the arch and the sign atop it.

DA SECOLARE SQUALLORE
A VITA NUOVA RESTITUITO

It means something like: The ancient centre of the city restored from its age-old squalor / to new life.

Piazza della Repubblica (Republic Square) is found in the Historic Centre of Florence between tourist hot spots of Piazza dell Duomo and Piazza della Signoria. It is a place that might be worth a visit when sightseeing around the city.

Historically, this was the area of the city Forum during Roman times and an important market area during the Middle Ages. After 19th century urban city planning, the area became a large open piazza.

Today, you can find much open space, a carrousel, the Column of Abundance and the old Arch of Triumph entrance to the square. There are open-air restaurants lining the square, some being of historical importance. You can also find street performances on the square as well as artists and other souvenir dealers plying their trade on the street that boundaries the piazza.

During our last visit to Florence, we found an enjoyable chocolate fair taking place, this made our visit to Piazza della Repubblica quite enjoyable. Unfortunately, during our latest trip - no such luck!

In the end, this might be an area worth visiting during your trip to Florence, especially if there are events being held. Otherwise, you may be better off just having a quick look-see and investing your sightseeing efforts in more interesting areas of the historic city centre.

I read that artists sometimes meet in cafes of the plaza today. I don't know if this true. Otherwise, it is a nice large square, with beautiful buildings, expensive cafes.

There are also some people trying to give you free presents as sign of friendship, explain that they will be insulted if you refuse the presents, and then ask you to donate money for some unknown cause ;-).

At night, we saw a musician playing famous songs on an electric violin; it was really nice.
