We were stolling in the park in Cortona - comfortable atmosphere a bit away from the whole, perfect playing ground for our trhee kids (and dog) directly beside the restaurant - a brilliant choice. Honestly we didn't know that it was a Japanese restaurant (had enough confidence, that Italian food is always good in a way) - we have been surprised by a great atmosphere, good background music - brilliant area, view over the lago trasimeno, all the guests were Italian (which is a good sign ;-).
All the food has been prepared by professional Japanese guys, while open kitchen allows to be observed during the preparation (confidence ;-), all the different plates were really delicious (and we have had already a lot of sushi experience all around the world). The waiter was very friendly (an managed the WHOLE terrase by himself (nearly 100 peple, obviously special for a Monday because his personal/service team had the spare time/off day), so you have to reserve a table early enough or come before 7.30 pm. Helpful? Please confirm oder disagree by your opinion.

My lovely husband has surprised me on my birthday bringing me to some "secret place" as he has said, and really I didn't know anything about this restaurant before. And of cource, my husband know about my big passion for fish and seafood, especially for fresh fish, especially for japanese, especially for different sushi, sashimi etc. The restaurant is located in the Public Garden of Cortona, between trees, sculptures, pedestrian paths and flower beds, is within easy reach on foot from big parking under the ancient city wall. The decor is kinda traditional & modern japanese sushi bar - Zen, minimalist, muted colours with accents of red & black, but inside it's a little bit old and need some refreshing, or it has been conceived, so-called style'element, concept (IMHO)... In any event it's very comfortable and cozy, especially outdoor/chilling spaces: there are two large terraces (one on the ground floor, second as a huge balcony) with romantic lighting, young bamboo plants, and a great view (almost "skyview") of the Valdichiana valley. I think, that balcony's view is better, but i don't know, cuz the first floor was closed for private event. The service is really hospitable. We came very early in the dinner hours and for about one hour we were the only visitors. And it's already enough for me, the same as renting whole terrace for 90 minutes without payment... by chance... nice, isn't it? The service is really hospitable; the lady waiter was very welcoming and sufficiently agile.
The owner is young, amiable and sympathetic man hailing from Brescia, that is very good, cuz Brescia is a city and comune in the region of Lombardy in northern Italy, it's close to Milan, where is national fish market, the largest and most important of the country & here in the middle of the Tuscany the most part people knows nothing about good sushi (IMHO). Umami's food is amazing, all the plate we've tried are fresh and tasty: yellow-tail and sea bass sashimi - perfect starter, tempura shrimp served hot with curry sauce, tiger rolls and the other rolls, which name i don't remember but they are covered in hot salted caramel lime sauce ... this sauce - just wow! it is also worth noting the wine - we've taken dry White (great trebbiano) which is called "Umami" and produced by famous winery Avignonesi. Well, i've got big satisfaction and now i can recommend this restaurant for sushi lovers (actually not only, cuz in menu you can find vegitables and meat plates).

Cortona is one of those magical places where everything just "fits". The food, the wine, the weather, the people....it all works beautifully together, including the stunning promenade along the city's southern ridge. Sadly, no one has been able to make a go of the one spot along the route set aside for a bar / restaurant - until now. The simple but chic sushi bar, Unami offers a touch of Japanese cuisine as a welcomed alternative to the plethora of wonderful Italian restaurants on offer. Add in the spectacular vistas and some nice jazz music and you're in for a very lovely dining experience at a reasonable price.

Tuscany is a paradise for gourmets. Food there is outstanding, however most of the restaurants lack imagination and serve always the same menu. One grows tired of crostini, pici al ragù and bistecca alla fiorentina. At a certain stage one needs a change, a recreation. This is what Umami offers! A tasteful and pleasant exotic experience. Having a Japanese dinner in Tuscany may sound weird, but unfortunately the Tuscan hinterland has no fish culture. Leaving aside the bacalà alla livornese there is no local fish tradition.

No one does it better than Japanese when it comes to seafood. Marco who courageously runs Umami has fully understood it. He has created a niche restaurant where you can have the best selection of Mediterranean fishes in the most genuine Japanese manner. A very simple and neat approach of super fresh products. Sashimis, sushis, tempuras etc. in the heart of Tuscany are like an oasis of freshness in an ocean of Chianina beef.
Besides there is a large choice of excellent sakes and local wines.

Not to be missed if you look for a break in the clouds of Tuscan traditional cuisine.

A beautiful open-air setting, friendly owner, fresh food, bold flavors and a welcome change in palate from typical Tuscan fare (which is delicious - don't get me wrong - just nice to mix it up a bit every now and then). We will most definitely return.
