Beware about final payments at the hotel.
We were fairly pleased with the hotel, location, staff, etc. until the last night. We reserved it on Booking.com which has you pay at the hotel when you are there.
We had an early flight back to the US the next day so we asked to settle our bill before we went out on a boat ride and for dinner our last night.
The man at the front desk said their bank connection was down and they could not process our credit card and we would have to pay the balance in cash. $1500 dollars or $1300 Euros!
AND he asked that we pay it before 9:00 that night when he was leaving at that time.
This was ridiculous as they had our credit card on file and could have just waited until THEIR problem was fixed the next day, and ran the card, as we and other guests explained to him. But he insisted on cash (maybe they needed money right then for something?) They had requested other guests to do the same.
After trying at 3 ATMS to to take that much out at once, it triggered our bank to shut down our card thinking it was fraud. So again we told him this was ridiculous, and ruining our last night there, but he insisted. There was not manager available. We were now very late for our reservations.
So we had to call our bank in the US to reset our card, go out again to find ATMs, asking our two sons traveling with us to take out about $400 each from their accounts, and we were still short. The bank will only give about $400/day and we didn't have more Euros as we were leaving.
So we told him we couldn't get more from the ATM until after midnight, and he agreed for us to pay the cash to the night watchman. And we had to go back out to take money out then. Which we did.
But it was all crazy and unprofessional, for such a supposedly elegant hotel. No one asks for that much money in cash, or expects a guest to have that on them at the last minute.
Really their problem became our problem, which you don't do to guests.
I wrote them a few days ago about it to give them a chance to respond before writing a poor review and never heard back from them.
I'll be curious to see what they answer to this, as it was all so unnecessary.

Dear monty36,
Your post is not a guests’ experience, which was positive as the review shows, but a malicious threat to extort money for non posting a bad review.
We would like to clear some of your statements of your public post, which differs slightly from your private (black)mail we received:
Your mail from 11 September 2017 states very clearly: “I would rather deal with you directly than post bad reviews on Booking and Trip Advisor. It would be good to have a credit back, for one night.”
Our front desk manager adviced “upon your arrival” of your three-night-stay about bank connection problems.
Because of this unpredictable inconvenience, we did a complimentary upgrade to your family: we assigned, instead of one quadruple room (you, your husband and your two sons in the twenties), two interconnected rooms (one double Superior plus one double DeLuxe room).
I am sure that also you can understand, that the daily rate of these two high-end rooms is definetely higher than of one quadruple room.
We sincerely apologize again for any inconvenience.
We are bit surprised that TripAdvisor does not do a first screening, just publishes everything.
Best regards.

This place is so romantic! Room was so nice, large, clean. The view from our window/Balcony was simply amazing. You can put chair and grab glass of wine , enjoy the view and that's all you need!
Breakfast was very good!
the place is far from parking ( Approximately 15 minutes to walk)

Dear LikMar,
thank you for your visit at Palazzo Cavalieri and your feedback.
Your remarks about far-away-parking seems not very correct: 1) Parking in nearby streets of Hotel Palazzo Cavalieri in white-line-bays is public, free and without any time limit; 2) Close 30mt (yes, 30mt) is a public parking area (charge); 3) Last but not least, Hotel Palazzo Cavalieri is pleased to organize valet parking (charge).
We wish you all the best and hope to see you again one day.

The hotel itself is fine. Excellent location, peaceful, decent breakfast, decent rooms.
However, somebody - family or friends - has to find the old lady owner something to do: sshe is pleasant enough but hovers over everything and everyone, micromanages and bosses staff and guests around making everyone nervous. Without her constant pestering, I'm sure the hotel would run more smoothly and calmly!

We do not comment this type of offensive review.

Can't fault this hotel at all. From the moment you walk through the front door you are treated like one of the family. Owner and staff were so friendly and helpful. Would definitely go back. Close and convenient to everything. Thank you for having us.

Nice, clean central Hotel. Parking is on street or a block away in lighted parking. Simple to get to.
Location is right off the island a few blocks away from the bridge.
Syracuse deserves a 2 night stay. We were there 1 night. Do try to attend live theatre.
