Most people who visit Syracuse (or Siracusa as it's known to Italians) stay in the Ortygia; my wife and I, however, chose a hotel located outside of Siracusa's old town and were delighted with our find. The Hotel Riviera offers tidy, quiet rooms with seaside views; we fell asleep each night to the sound of breakers washing over the rocky shore outside our window. One of our hosts, Umberto, spoke excellent English and offered very helpful recommendations on local attractions, along with excellent directions, while his mother, Angela (it's a family-run place) was always friendly and welcoming. The breakfasts, included in the price of the room, were the best of our trip, including as they did some eggs cooked in Sicilian fashion (hard-boiled and served with oregano, olive oil, and fresh cherry tomatoes).

A couple of things to be aware of: first, the hotel has no elevator and all the rooms are up at least one flight of stairs; second, the higher you go, the weaker the wi-fi signal. So you want to have Internet access in your room and/or have trouble climbing stairs, ask for a room on a lower floor.

Room Tip: Rooms 10 and 11 both offer sea views.

The hotel has an amazing deck that is right on the sea so a great spot to relax. The hotel is located out of the old town but is only a 15 minute walk and it was a good location and had free parking. The breakfast was very simple and abit disappointing - just a couple of bread rolls and a yoghurt.

A fabulous deck at seaside with wonderful views. Views of the sea from the window of your room or stroll to the deck.
The seaside rooms on Ortigia have traffic driving by late at night and early in the morning...The Hotel Riveria is off the main traffic, quiet and is a nice walk to Ortigia sites. The restaurant was being remodeled in April but should be in operation soon. If you like to travel the road less traveled I highly reccomend The Riviera Hotel. Most of the staff speak only Italian but 2 speak English.
