My partner and I visited Ortea Luxury Palace in August 2019. We were reasonably happy with our stay. The check-in process was efficient, and our room was stylish and well-equipped (unlike the lobby, which felt sterile and tired). We were in a split level junior suite with a sea view, and on both levels the view was partially obscured by the massive parking lot directly in front of the hotel. I suspect this is the case for all rooms facing the sea, which is unfortunate, but it is not a deal breaker. The breakfast spread was adequate, but more plant-based options are needed. I was very unhappy about the additional charge to use the pool and sauna facilities – in a luxury hotel, these amenities should be provided as standard inclusions. No wonder they were deserted!

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your review and I am sorry about your unhappiness about the extra charge but our indoor swimming pool is subject to an extra charge being part of the SPA path.

I will extend your positive words of appreciation with the Staff of the reception for the efficient check-in.

Hope that you can visit our property again.

Palace luxury is such a grand name but when you start to look at details, something is amiss. Perhaps the name incites you to look for luxury.

You could have luxury without being grand. Something perhaps with the interior design of the Palace. We spend the NYE here and very fortunate to experience the fireworks right in front of the balcony on the 3rd floor looking at the harbour. It felt cold.

The receptionists were friendly and veterans with service and I applaud them during the first day of the year. Bright and cheerful.

The design didn't quite work for me but the intention was there.

The Ortea Palace Hotel has an excellent location and is a splendid property. The room was remarkable and unique with the two floors room design. The service provided exceeded our expectations. We stayed a couple of nights and would return without hesitation in the future.

We had the wonderful pleasure of staying at the Ortea Palace in early December of this year. It was our second visit to Ortigia, and we now look forward to going back again! We were so impressed with the elegance, and care that go into hosting guests here. We had dietary issues, and it was suggested we meet with the Chef. What care and thoughtfulness were then provided for dinner, and breakfasts! The owners are fantastic people and seek making everything perfect. We would say, they achieved their goal!

This is a beautiful, grand luxury hotel, new and clean, in a great location just across the bridge in Ortigia. Easy to drive to, they give your plate number to the police so you can drive in the ZTL, and easy to walk to the tourist sights and restaurants of Ortigia. Overall I was very happy with our choice and would recommend it. There are opportunities to improve, however, and the pool and parking situation caused me to reluctantly deduct one star.

We had a lovely 2-level suite with a full bathroom (shower only) on each level, and a view of the harbor. There were marble floors throughout. Downstairs was the living room and closet with 3 small drawers, as well as the bathroom. Upstairs was a loft bedroom overlooking the living space, and a larger bathroom with natural light and a good-size shower. From reading other reviews, I think the suites vary, some have a tub in the bedroom, and no shower upstairs? Nice big fluffy bath towels. A couple small oversights – no soap dishes (balance the bar on the tap?) and no makeup mirror upstairs, only downstairs where there was no natural light. I thought the room was very comfortable, my husband didn’t like having the clothes closet downstairs.

On arrival, we were seated in the lobby with a welcome drink (Arnold Palmer), then escorted to our room where a welcome bottle of champagne and plate of cannoli awaited. Bottled water is provided. We asked the bellman if the tap water was ok, he said yes, but the woman at the front desk said no, not recommended – it’s safe but full of chlorine and doesn’t taste good. Each evening, turndown service included a different sweet treat and two more bottles of water.

Breakfast is very good – an extensive buffet, plus you can order eggs, pancakes, waffles, French toast - some items like eggs Benedict have an additional charge. Best yogurt we had anywhere.

A few things made our first impressions less stellar –

* Parking is an issue. There is a huge pay lot in front of the hotel, but they told us it’s 15 euro for 24 hours, payable in cash only (credit cards can be used for one hour, but not 24??) and it to be coins, not bills…but the hotel can’t make change for us, suggested we try a tabaccheria. Or use their valet parking for 30 euro/day, and call a half hour ahead of time when we want the car. I’m not sure if the info about using credit cards or bills was accurate, clearly they wanted to discourage using the public lot, but I would expect a luxury hotel to be able to make change for their guests.

* There was a thunderstorm our first night, so we decided to stay in and order room service. We could not get the phone to work, ended up walking downstairs to place an order. They repaired it and it worked fine thereafter.

* There is a nice indoor pool downstairs; we went to use it for a quick dip before it closed at 8pm, only to find there is a charge of 25 euro per person, for all day (only open a few hours in the morning, then again from 4:30 to 8). Given the rate we were paying for the room, this was shocking and really put us off. I’ve never seen a hotel charge for access to the pool. No way would we pay 50 euro to use it for 30 minutes, no wonder it was deserted.

* Service was generally excellent, but with some notable gaps. There is one concierge, with limited hours. She was very friendly and super helpful with recommendations for Noto, where she used to live. But when we tried to find out about other wine-tasting options in the area, she didn’t seem familiar with them and didn’t do much research, other than trying to contact the one winery we had identified. We ended up finding a place on our own. Asked about boat rides, she immediately pitched their private boat options (for 500 euro & up) but when I asked about a shorter tourist boat ride, she just said there were some at the harbor, offered no information. We asked several people for non-seafood restaurant recommendations, starting with the woman who checked us in. She seemed stumped, said everyplace here serves fish, her only suggestion was the hotel restaurant (of course) or maybe pizza. The concierge couldn’t do much better, even though she doesn’t eat fish herself, though she did give us a few suggestions. The bright spot was Silvia at the front desk – she was terrific, an absolute gem! A Siracusa native, she gave us several great restaurant recommendations, and also went out of her way to help us with other information.
