“Good experience at the Palazzo Abadessa”
Reviewed 29 November 2011

The Palazzo Abadessa offers much for the visitor to Venice for the first time which we were. I'll attempt to answer the questions I had when looking for hotels in Venice.

Access. As far as getting to the hotel from the airport it is convenient from 2 approaches. If you wish to keep costs down, you can find your way to a vaporetto and exit at the Ca' d'Oro stop. A Google map will show you the way from there to the hotel. It is a short walk and for a minimally physical able person a breeze to get to. We elected to hire a water taxi and once in Venice -- climbed aboard what I'd call a "speed boat" that took us right to the canal entrance to the hotel. We climbed from the boat and walked into the lobby. Same for our departure from the hotel to the ships port. You may want to look into sharing the cost of this as it is not inexpensive but very convenient.

The location is good although not in the mainstream area of Venice. It is close to many restaurants, shopping and the vaporetto. It is and within a reasonable walking distance to for starters, the Rialto bridge and area. I'm not the greatest at walking distances yet we found the distances very acceptable. We even did a walking tour on our own from St Mark's Square back to the hotel. My point here is that while I had concerns initially about location -- that concern was totally unfounded.

The hotel itself is what it is. It's an old palace. To us it was charming and interesting. The morning breakfasts included were ample and we loved sitting in the private courtyard which is peaceful and inviting. We sat there often upon returning from our excursions into Venice. We had a suite on the 2nd floor. The room was huge with a fresco painted on the ceiling. You do need to climb stairs to get to the 2nd and 3rd levels. Noise level? Not an issue. Service? Outstanding as the people go out of their way to assure your stay is acceptable.

We had dinner one evening at Osteria Ca' D'Oro (La Vedova). You can check out reviews on Trip Advisor and decide for yourself. We loved it. Don't be reluctant about this hotel as it is a good choice. I'm sure there are others that offer comparable accommodations - - - but this is among the good ones.

Room Tip: No elevator - be prepared to climb stairs to your room. Your luggage will be brought up for you.

In a great location yet away from the hustle and bustle of Venice. Service was excellent.

The Palazzo Abadessa lived up to it's reputation! Upon our arrival by water taxi we were greeted to "our home in Venice" by Darwin ( who was gracious throughout our stay and made every effort to make it more memorable ). The Palazzo is a true Gem, decorated in the classic Venetian Style with original (school of) Tintoretto's,frescoed ceilings, period furnishings and Murano chandeliers. We had the Red Junior Suite which was appointed nicely and upon arrival met us with a complimentary bottle of Prosecco and fresh fruit. The daily Continental breakfast was very good and can be enjoyed in the (rare for Venice) garden with classic and modern sculpture.
The Palazzo is located in the Canneregio neighborhood, far enough away from the crazy crowds of San Marco but close enough to walk to everything or take the vaporreto from the Ca' d'Oro station which is very close. This is a great neighborhood with many hidden treasures to explore!
The only disappointment is that we had only three nights here, however we will again stay at the Palazzo Abadessa on our next trip to Venice!!

My husband and I stayed here for four days in July 2011, as the first part of our honeymoon, before a week-long cruise, and it was the best part of the whole trip! The rates were very reasonable, especially for Venice, the hotel was easy to find (down a little alley), the room was lovely and lacked nothing. The included breakfasts that we were fortunate enough to be able to eat the private garden were delicious and filling, and the staff was wonderful, especially Darwin, the concierge. He was cheerful and helpful from booking to check-out, and coming back to his smiling face every day after sight-seeing was like coming home to a kindly uncle.

Palazzo Abadessa isn't close to the main tourist areas, but we found it easy and quick to get everywhere we needed or wanted to go, especially as it's close to a vaporetto stop. My husband and I are definitely looking forward to returning to Venice, and when we do we will be staying at the same hotel.

We spent 4 days here and were so sorry to leave. Everything about it was great. Location, staff, facilities, room. Prices are very reasonable for Venice and this place lacked not one thing. The breakfast were fabulous! Would definately come back!
