Owner description: A thousand years of history and 250 years of astronomy at the Specola: born as medieval tower, in 1767 it was transformed in Astronomical Observatory. The Observatory is one of the main structures of INAF - National Institute for Astrophysics now, and in its museum you can see rooms and instruments used by the past-centuries astronomers

The tour is really worth it as it show cases the history of the astronomy but also the history of Padova. The history of the tower goes beyond the observatory, where it was originally a prison.

Also the 360 deg views from the top is great and helps to see the 'global' orientation of the city.

As some other reviewers have said the tour is in Italian. However, the ladies who run it have a English crib sheet they will lend you, and their enthusiasm is infectious. Many wonderful exhibits and great views from the top of the tower. A real trip into history. note tour is later in the summer at weekends, check the website.

Rarely open, 4pm on Saturdays & Sundays, we've struggled to get into here for a while. The guided tour leaves at 4pm promptly and you need to buy tickets from the nearby Oratorio S Michaele. Max 30 people per tour.
The tour is only in Italian and there are several exhibits and instruments with English descriptions. Guided over the three floors and finishing in the specula at the top it takes over an hour. Once at the top the window blinds are raised and visitors are encouraged to go outside, the reward being stunning 360 degree views of Padua.
