It was our very first time eating Eritrean food and it has been a very good one.
We booked a table in a room where you eat with your hands, no cutlery, sitting on the floor and barefoot to enjoy a sensational deep experience that goes beyond a simple dinner. The food was delicious and the personnel kind and caring.
I highly recommend this restaurant for a good dinner and a good experience.

I went to Mar Rosso with my wife on a quiet Saturday night. We generally like ethnic food, even though I am sometimes disappointed by the amount of spices they use to prepare the dishes. Mar Rosso was a great finding, both because African restaurants are not so common in our town, and because the food was tasty but extremely good. We split one mixed appetizer, which that night included hummus with avocado and a boiled plantain mash. Our main course choices were two combo dishes, chicken and veggies for me and (spiced) beef and vegetables with the special sourdough bread for my wife. We closed out dinner splitting a great blueberry and chocolate mousse. The service was great, the owners are very nice and do their best to make you feel comfortable. You can choose the african room (low tables, sitting on the floor with no shoes) or the regular dining room with tables and chair. Book in advance, they have a limited number if seats and it may be difficult to find a table!

The Eritrean Mar Rosso is a long time favorite among immigrants and youngsters in the San Salvario neighbourhood, a run-down-now-gentrified quarter close to the city centre. Its young multicultural vibe, with the lounge and internet cafe filled with ethnic and world music, somewhat changes towards the evening, when the candle-lit black and red decor turns the restaurant more intimate and romantic. Even though you can ask to be sit at a traditional table in one of the rooms, for a full experience you will be asked to take your shoes and sit comfortably on the floor between pillows. They have excellent African food recipes, including vegetarian options, but the national dish 'zigini' or 'zighni' is definitely the star: a spicy (with a blend called 'berbere') tomato and lamb stew served over 'injera', a regional gluten-free teff flour flatbread which serves as the tool to eat the zigini with your right hand. Good selection of wines and desserts. A very special project started by am Italian-Eritrean couple which reflects the history of migration in Turin, particularly in San Salvario and, in absolute terms, a reference in ethnic food in the city.

Advertised as African restaurant, Mar Rosso sits in the heart of San Salvario and can offer dishes from the traditional cuisine of the Horn of Africa.
We dined in the African room where you'll be asked to take off your shoes and will be able to sit on the floor and eat without cutlery from a low table. The Eritrean dish we shared for example is supposed to be eaten with bare hands with the help of injera, a region-specific variety of sourdough bread.
A more conventional dining room is also available and the waiting staff will help you navigate the menu if you're unfamiliar with anything.
We had a very pleasant experience overall: definitely worth trying.

Me and my boyfriend visited Mar Rosso last week.
We had dinner in the room where you eat on the floor without shoes.
It was very characteristic.
The food was very tasty, maybe too much expensive.
But I would surely recommend it.
