We stayed here based on TripAdvisor reviews.
It is located at the very northern end of "Hotel Row", with all the old grand (stuffy) hotels. This hotel, located in an old villa, is a breath of fresh air. It's run by a couple (Elena (with excellent English and couldn't do enough for us!) and Davide (never saw Davide - wasn't "his turn" the two days we were there)) who bought the place in April and are doing a restoration to bring it back to its old glory.
We stayed in a lovely room with a generous balcony and a partial lake view (some trees block a part of the view). It was reasonably sized, but the bathroom, while adequate, could stand some restoration - the shower (actually a tub with a shower head) had a strange configuration.
There is an elevator.
Breakfast was consistent with the better boutique hotels in which we stayed.
The hotel is close to one of the ferry terminals to the islands.
All in all, we thought is a good value and we'd stay here again.
A couple of points: The name of the hotel is La Fontana, not Fontana as TripAdvisor shows. Secondly, I don't know why the lead photo in the TripAdvisor page is what it is - this shows the gardens on Isola Bella, not the Hotel La Fontana!More
