Many people go to Ventimiglia for the shopping, and forget to look across to the old town. Crossing the footbridge that spans the river as it joins the sea, you walk up following the signs to the cathedral, passing several smaller churches as you climb the narrow lanes. It is another world, with few tourists. Locals drinking coffee in their little cafe, a few shops and magnificent views of the mountains greet you as you get to the top of the town. Here you find a maze of tiny courtyards and alleys, tunnels and ancient stores.

...it’s filled with cheap imported crap.

But the regular everyday market is worth a visit for some cheese, meat, arancini etc. Also the town centre, within 500m of the train station, has somehow managed to maintain an air of authenticity.

Beach is rocky and too much litter.

Went to Ventimiglia on a day trip by train from Nice. It‘s a nice old part of this small Italian coastal city.

Fantastic location just above the new town and along the coast from Nice.
Proper earthy Italy with some very friendly locals and stunning architecture!

Ventimiglia is a pleasant small town to visit. Its Friday market is huge and fun to visit . . . whole town is "crazy." Lots of excellent restaurant and the boardwalk is an excellent place to spend a sunny afternoon for "passeggiata." You can also connect to SNCF (French trains) and Trenit (Italian trains) from here for various towns in Italy and France.
