We first visited Vernazza 10 years ago. We did our due diligence and researched the best place to stay. Since there are no traditional hotels, it is very important where you chose to stay as you will interact with the owner in a very personal way. Our experience with Giuliano and his rooms far exceeded any expectation we had. Giuliano's place is at the top of the town close to the train station. He will meet you and carry your luggage up the many steps to the room. The steps are actually part of the National Park trail. Once you arrive, you will see the great care and painstaking detail Giuliano has given to his places. We have stayed in 3 of the 4 rooms, each with its own distinctive details. Giuliano has a communal kitchen area where you can keep items in the refrigerator and you will always find large bottles of cold water in there for guests. In the kitchen area you will also find bottle openers, dishes, glasses, towels, etc. for your convenience. The view from his place is just stunning, and he has built incredible terraces from which his guests get to experience its beauty each evening.

Giuliano has built each of the 4 rooms with his own hands, He is quite gifted in the area of stonework. He has taken great pains to make a beautiful place for people to stay and only asks in return that you treat it as your own. I can honestly say that there is nothing I have seen in the U.S. that compares to what Giuliano has created here. Your respect and kindness will be returned exponentially. We have become friends with Giuliano, and have made it a point to visit him even if we are not specifically visiting Cinque Terre. Once you have stayed with him, you are considered a friend. On one occasion he went out of his way to help us get an inexpensive room for our college daughter on late notice. While in Athens, her wallet was stolen. I contacted Giuliano and we were able to have her credit card sent to him so that when she arrived there she could get it. I am not sure what we would have done. She was at the beginning of traveling for a month after studying abroad for 4 months.

I have had the pleasure of sending friends to Giuliano's place. All have left feeling the same way we do. Vernazza is a special place, and Giuliano has become a lifelong friend.

Room Tip: The cottage is the most private.

We just spent an epic three days and nights at Giuliano's place in Vernazza. This place is characterized by warmth and heart. Every detail, from stonework to furnishings communicates a love for life and an understanding of the needs of travellers. You can come here for privacy and adventure, and as well, be impacted by the beauty of a simpler way of life. It's honestly like a 'home away from home'. We stayed in Little Suite Sophia, but all 4 rooms/suites are well appointed. We especially enjoyed meeting others and sharing life with them on our shared terrace... and relaxing on lounge chairs, either in the sun or shade. We walked the trails hard, so this was a welcome oasis upon our return each day. Choose this place if you appreciate that you are sharing someone's beloved home. And if you do, you will leave impacted by the simple beauty of the Italian way of life.

My husband and I were lucky enough to snag a reservation here after being referred by friends who had stayed the year before. The owner, Giuliano, is such a sweetheart! He truly cares about the place as well as his guests. He built each residence himself and his dedication to the space shows in the craftsmanship of the rooms, and the attention to all the gardens surrounding the rooms! He even provides guests with refillable water bottles to use during their stay and plenty of guide books for suggestions on what to do in Cinque Terre. Also, his family basically runs the town - I would say the majority of the restaurants/bars are owned by a member of his family!

The camere is a short climb from the Vernazza train station (uphill and towards the signs going to the path to Corniglia). We were met at the station by Giuliano, who graciously carried my suitcase up the steps!! The views from the terraces are breathtaking!

We stayed in the Villa Sofina room, which is a separate villa that has its own private terrace and en suite bathroom, and is air conditioned! The bathrooms are stocked with your usual shampoo, condition, soap kits, and there is a hair dryer provided as well. The shower is separated by a curtain and has pretty good water pressure.

The camere (and really Cinque Terre itself) is set amongst the hills, so there are quite a number of steps to climb; this would not be the best place for anyone with any joint issues or injuries/disabilities that would make using stairs difficult. But that being said, if we ever find ourselves in Cinque Terre/Vernazza again, this would be the place we would go without hesitation!

Room Tip: The Villa Sofina has a private terrace and A/C and a great en suite bathroom!

Being at Giuliano's Camere is like walking into a postcard. So beautiful. So soulful. So relaxing. Giuliano has put his heart and soul into building these beautiful rooms and lush gardens - you feel it all around. The detail of his mason work and the strength of his spirit is everywhere. Blows my mind to think he brought each rock up the hill to his property, one by one to create his place. Guiliano is an artist - through and through. Even now as I am home, I can imagine his garden, sitting on his terrace in the quiet hours of the morning and looking out over the town...pure beauty and so inspiring. And Guiliano is now our friend - we so enjoyed his company- honest discussions, sharing stories, discussing life... He welcomed us into his home and into his world and we felt it. You have to really be a person who appreciates life and love and spirit to understand how special Giuliano and his place is - and if you are one of these people, you are in for something so magical and real no words can truly describe...keep the special vibe going...

Room Tip: all our absolutely beautiful give you access to the patio terraces - a slice of heaven!

My husband and I were fortunate to be able to stay with Guiliano once again. Guiliano thinks of everything. From explaining the Air conditioning, the towels for the beach, coffee, the refrigerator to keep your breakfast, cheese or bottle of wine, and fresh water. We chose the Little Suite Sofia this time with a shared terrace. The room was perfect.
We were once again surrounded by his beautiful garden. Guiliano came up at night to tend the garden and put on some wonderful Italian opera from his friend. The scene with a bottle of wine and cheese from the local store couldn't have been more perfect. The view of Vernazza is spectacular and Guiliano will meet you to help you with your luggage as there are some stairs. You lose yourself in the beauty of a beautiful stone building hand built by the master stone mason himself. The love and passion that Guiliano shares with you of his village and family is a true local experience that you will never forget.
If you truly want to embrace this lifestyle, you should plan at least 3 days. You will find yourself enjoying some wine and sharing the sunset with your neighbors or go down to the beach to enjoy a glass of the local sweet wine Sciacchetra . Take the time to enjoy an early morning coffee, watch a local tend his flower garden or vineyard, smell the lemon trees. Walk one of the tiny back streets into the village. You can't get lost.

If you take the time to get to know Guiliano and respect his home, he in turn will respect you. It's not about making money with Guiliano, it's all about respect for his home and village.
Breath deep and enjoy a memorable experience you will never forget.
