“Great Times for Vacationing Couple”
Reviewed 21 December 2011

We travel a lot and are pretty picky, so trust me with this recommendation. I'm not sure I got the greatest feel for this city in just 3 days but it seemed to be a perfect location. This is an excellent choice. Room was nice, and had space for luggage. Bedding nice, bathroom new and clean. The breakfast was pretty solid - nothing amazing but nice. In the nice weather you can even sit outside for breakfast. We went to the rooftop for a drink and I'd say that was so-so because it was sort of dead, but up there, but no big deal. The people were very nice, and made trustworthy recommendations for dinner and as they even made one or two other reservations for us. Super place.

I spent 3 solid days researching every hotel in Rome to get the best location with a spa and breakfast included for around £150 per night or under.

I found this hotel and managed to get the best price through lastminute.com with 20% off in their sale. (i found www.hotelscombined.com best for shaving the price off places since this sale has now finished.) I also downloaded the voucher from tripadviser to get free internet there.

The location is amazing, the staff very friendly and helpful and the spa great for the end of a day of sightseeing.

The standard room is a little small for the money and only had a shower, but as our movie channel didnt work (Warning: 12 euros per movie) we were upgraded to a superior which is a much better size if you afford it and are staying longer than two nights i would definitely upgrade.

We ate at the restaurant as www.diningcity.com reviewers gave it 9.7 out of 10 and it is in the Michelin guide. The staff were very good the cocktails were amazing but on the whole the meal was very overpriced, its came to 130 euros for 2 champagne cocktails, 2 steak dinners and 1 dessert.

The spa is small but very nice after a long days walking, again though i think the treatments are overpriced and there is no couples treatments available as the two treatment rooms are small however the staff down in the spa are very welcoming. - If youre looking for a romantic spa day for two, i suggest you book the couples day at Parco de prinicpi north villa Borgese (http://www.princespa.com/modulo_pacchetti_eng/25200_1_DAY_COUPLE_PACKAGES.htm?id_sezione=30131 but do check that their pool is working as we cancelled when we found it was under maintenance.)

The hotel is central for everything, the Vatican, Campo dei fiori and Piazza Navona are all about about 10 mins walk away but the street the hotel is on is quiet.

The hotel is not pretentious and the atmosphere relaxing, if you want pure luxury head to via Veneto (Majestic hotel is worth going for the restaurant alone...best ever!!!) if you want a nice hotel and sightseeing is your aim and youre curving your budget but still want upmarket then i recommend here.

Have a great trip and here are a few tips:

Sunday brunch: Hassler hotel top of spanish steps 54 euros for champagne all you can eat 5 star buffet and coffees with a view over all of Rome in one of the most prestigious hotels.

For a special dinner with famous chef beautiful food in incredible surroundings go to http://www.filippolamantia.com/ out of this world. (150 euros for 2 people starter 4 glass of wine, mains and 1 dessert.)

Rome is very romantic, if you plan to propose here there is a Tiffany's near the Spanish steps but its very small, but horsedrawn carridges and the restaurants above would all be amazing settings.

Lastly, Rome is the capital of fashion but the cobbles are not filled in, walking in heels will take you forever and i nearly broke mine several times, may i suggest evening ballerina shoes and flat boots for sightseeing ladies.

Room Tip: Room 301 is nice has both bath and shower, 2 armchairs and poof with tv, desk and double bed is size...

We have just returned from a long weekend in Rome and I felt compelled in the light of some of the recent scathing reviews of the St George to write one based on our own experience of staying there, particularly as we got a little concerned when we saw those bad reviews just before we set off for Rome.

The first thing I have to say is that as far as the service goes and the attitude of the staff, from the moment we checked in to settling the bill prior to check out all of the staff here were polite, courteous and helpful. I don't know the name of the lady on reception during the day, but she couldn't have been more friendly and obliging. Whenever we rang down to room service which was on each occasion for things like whisky glasses, ice and so on and at no profit to them, they responded quickly and in a friendly manner (yes the drinks and food are expensive which is why we made our own arrangements, but aren't they always in top notch, big city hotels?) And all the prices are clearly stated, it's not as if there trying to pull the wool over anyone's eyes.

My favourite feature of the hotel and the main reason I booked the St George was the spa, pool, turkish bath, sauna and steam room. At the end of long days walking around Rome it was great to be able to jump in the pool, have a turkish bath etc and then have a sleep on a lounger before going out for the evening. Again the staff in this part of the hotel were extremely friendly and obliging.

The breakfast at the hotel consists of scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, tomatoes and then a wide range of pastries, drinks, yoghurts etc etc. A great array of fare, only slight complaint was the bacon and sausage were normally pretty cold, but other than that it was excellent.

A couple of weeks before we went we saw reviews stating that rooms on the the roadside were very noisy, and as we were keen on a decent nights sleep each night we emailed and requested a quiet room, which the hotel immediately sorted out for us- it was in the centre of the hotel overlooking the glass roofed restaurant and the surrounding rooftop apartments, and was very quiet. The room was on the small side, but very comfortable, nicely furnished, comfortable bed and pillows and a really nice shower room (no bath which my wife was a bit disappointed about but didn't bother me).

Lastly, the location is spot on- central to all the main attractions (but that doesn't mean close to them, just central to them, Rome is a very big city so be prepared to do some walking or get taxis..). We would strongly recommend the following; La Carbonara restaurant on Campo de Fiori, Vino Olio wine bar just a few hundred yards from the hotel (my personal favourite, it is very much a locals and not a tourists bar but they made us feel very welcome), going to the Spanish steps area for shopping on via condotti, coffee at caffe grecco and a walk through the villa borghese park (we went to the galleria borghese but i think this is one for true art enthusiasts), vatican museum, st peters basilica, trevi fountain and the pantheon are all amazing but it was the Colosseum above all that really blew us away (buy tickets online before going and bypass the queues).

This was our first trip to Rome, and we absolutely fell in love with it and can't wait to return, and when we do hopefully we will stay at the St George. I agree that it lacks something that the truly great established 5 star hotels have which is why I give it 4 stars, but it's nevertheless the perfect base for a weekend stay in Rome.

Great hotel across the river from the Vatican. This is a small boutique hotel that is really works to take care of there clients. We loved our stay, had a great room that was very quiet and very clean. The room was ready on time and the staff was incredible about trying to help with every question or request. Yes we would stay there again.

Having read the reviews and just having been there, I am amazed that the hotel has not made any effort in improving the negative reports. It is ridiculously overheated and impossible to sleep at night with the windows open, the lack of working wifi/computer space ( everyone had to sit in the lobby)is cause for concern. However, the front desk staff (one helpful woman in the morning at checkout) remain problematic. Why is that?
Skip the attempt at a dining room in a city of wonderful restaurants. However, the breakfast is one of the best I have experienced.
I would not return here.

Room Tip: Insist on an upgrade.

Dear JackoSharon

Thank you very much for taking the time and trouble to write to us regarding your recent stay at the St.George Hotel.

I would like to apologize for the unfortunate lack of sleep that you experienced in our hotel due to the powerful heating system. Unfortunately, the two pipe system the hotel is equipped with does not allow us to satisfy all temperature requests. As I am sure you have noticed, the St.George Hotel is housed by a 15th century building and due to the Italian regulation we are unable to modify the shape or the size of any rooms and this is one of the reasons why some of them may not provide generous space. I would also like to take this opportunity to inform you and all readers that the WiFi system has been upgraded and it is now available in all rooms.

Finally, but most of all, I would like to thank you for the excellent feedback on our breakfast. We care for our guests and wish to offer them a real taste of an Italian breakfast plus everything they would find back home.

I sincerely hope we will have the chance to welcoming you again soon.

Yours sincerely
