Owner description: When In Rome Tours is a collective of like-minded tourism industry professionals, comprising company directors, two business managers, several admins, and dedicated support staff. Our Rome tour guides are fully licensed and have been leading Rome walks for many years in both English and native Spanish. Instead of working for a corporate tours provider on a commission basis, we have worked our way up over the years to become Rome's leading independently established tour operator. There are no middlemen, book a Rome or Vatican walking tour with us and you will tour WITH US. In this way, you get value for money with no extra costs at any stage. Our guides are experts in their chosen field, be they art historians or archaeologists. Our primary aim is to deliver education about Rome and the Vatican in an enjoyable way, so we take great care to ensure that our guides are as personable as they are professional. Small group tours of Rome work well for everyone and they are our focus. If, however, you wish to book a fully private and exclusive tour, we have many private Rome tour options for you to consider. As a fully licensed tour agency in Rome, we have to bear considerable operating costs as anyone working in Italy will tell you, so we are very proud to announce that our prices continue to be as competitive today as they always have been. In order to be fully transparent, tour costs on our website include all tickets and all local taxes - there is never anything else to pay over and above the prices we publish online. One of our many guarantees is "skip the Vatican line". The same also applies to our ancient Rome tours - "skip the Coliseum line". You will always enter venues in Rome before everyone else on a Rome or Vatican tour with When In Rome Tours. Our reputation in Rome is second to none, and we are sent recommendations every day. When In Rome Tours strives to offer the best possible tours of Rome and the Vatican, and we will continue to pursue even higher service standards in future.

“Luigi...the best tour guide you could wish for!!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 February 2012

When visiting the Vatican City we weren't going to use a tour company, but we got chatting to one of When In Rome's reps and he said that Luigi was one of their best and to just listen to him for a bit before the tour was to set off and then decide whether we wanted to or not. After listening for a few mins we decided to take the tour rather than just wandering about by ourselves. The Vatican is immense and so full of beautiful sights and histoy that it's worth being shown around by someone who knows the history and the most important sights as really you could spend days wandering about looking at everything! Even in February it's quite busy and the guided tours get you a queue jump that can be invaluable. Luigi was excellent! He was passionate and enthusiastic and certainly knew his onions! Most tours are about 2hrs but Luigi's was nearly 4! You definitely need a pair of comfortable shoes and a camera, although there are areas where you can't use them (like the Cistine Chapel) and most importantly remember that it is a sacred place of worship so in St.Peter's Basillica men must remove any head wear and you have to try to be as quiet as you can.

The tour cost €40 per person and a €10 deposit for the headset which was returned at the end of the tour. I would highly recommend the tour and especially Luigi...it was well worth the money!!!

“Engaging, interesting and just long enough to see the important things”

Like many others, I was not sure which tour company to use but I was more than pleased with When in Rome Vatican Tours and particularly liked our lovely guide Chiara who made 3 hours pass very quickly. She was both amusing and knowledgeable and kept our smallish group interested throughout . The Vatican Museum, Sistine , St Peter's and Vatacombs tour
gives you a real flavour of this amazing place. It is quite tiring so 3 hours is about enough information to take in on a tour. Chiara is very sensitive to her group's needs and offers plenty of comfort stops etc. She speaks excellent English and you are also given headphones to help you hear the commentary. No waiting in lines.

“Far exceeded expectations”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 February 2012

Our tour guide, Chiara, was absolutely fabulous. I didn't expect to have such an expert guide. She really, really knows her stuff. She also has a great personality. She's easy to understand, welcomes questions and has a great sense of humor. The next tour I take, I want her as my guide. It was a 3 hour tour, but I could easily have listened to her for twice that long.

“If it is your first visit to the Vatican go with When In Rome Tours it is worth the money”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 February 2012

Despite various problems all to do with the heavy snow in Rome whilst we were there, Chiara our guide did a great job. The Vatican Museum authorities had closed several parts of the museum for "Health & Safety" reasons, which seemed to be over-cautious to say the least. Nevertheless Chiara gave us a wonderful insight into the exhibits she was able to show us. Her English is superb and she articulates everything really well. She demonstrates such a passion for her subject so that she enthralls her audience. She tried her best to persuade the authorities to allow us to take the passage between the Vatican Museum and the St Peter's Basilica but to no avail. Like she said it would take two men 10 minutes to clear the snow and make it safe but they don't care, they have your money - so what!! We had paid extra to see St Peter's but because of the closure of the short-cut we had to take the long walk round and then join the line for the security check into the Basilica. Chiara entertained us with a talk on St Peter's Square while we waited and then when we got in to the Basilica she showed us the highlights before leaving us to look around ourselves. The tour was well worth the money despite all the difficulties. The snow took the Romans by surprise, it hasn't snowed there since 1986 and it clearly threw everything into confusion. I threw a coin into the Trevi fountain so I hope this means I will go back and hopefully the weather won't be against us next time.

“Excellent Tour!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 February 2012

We went on a group tour of the Vatican Museum and Sistine Chapel. Our tour guide was wonderful. He explained the paintings, the history behind the paintings, history of the buildings we toured and patiently answered questions from our group. This is a great deal for a tour of the Vatican and Chapel. Other tour groups I researched charge 50 Euro or more than what When In Rome charges. I would definitely recommend this tour company for Vatican tours or other tours of Rome.
