Our host Catello picked us up and brought us back to his lovely place. The fridge was stocked with beer, water and a big bowl of fresh fruit. Catellos english is limited, but he made us feel very welcome and delivered us pizzas on our first night. Roman Mansion is set back from the busy road and is a peaceful oasis (dead quiet at night time) with a lovely little pool. I had a swim a couple of times. Accomodation was big enough for two, with kitchen, bedroom and bathroom. Kitchen well equipped, the only small problem we had was that the shower was cold in the morning sometimes. We found, after a couple of days, that if we ran the hot tap in the basin til it was hot, the the shower would be too.
Roman Mansion is ideally situated, just a short stroll to the bakers (Il Fornaio) for fresh bread and general groceries, and a few doors away from them, a lovely pattisserie (Peluso & Miranda) with lovely cakes. The centre of Pompei is about 5-10 minutes walk away, and about 15 to the excavations. Cicumvesuviana train staion is 5 minutes walk, where you can get trains to Naples, Sorrento (with change) Herculaneum, etc, very cheap too. 2.20 euros to Sorrento, 2.60 to Naples. Plenty of places to eat and drink in Pompei and people were really friendly and helpful. Catello took us to the train station at the end of our stay, a perfect end to our holiday.
We stayed at the 'Roman Mansion' for the second time and from the beginning it was the start of an unbelievable holiday. Our very good friend Catello and his family welcomed us with such warmth and hospitality we knew it was going to be a holiday in heaven. The accommodation was again clean and comfortable and everything we needed for a relaxing stay, nothing was too much trouble when we needed assistance. After travelling around all day and feeling quite exhausted what a better way to relax having a dip in the beautiful pool and laying on the sun beds drinking vino! We highly recommend the 'Roman Mansion' for a heavenly holiday, you won't be disappointed with anything, and when you're holiday has ended like us you'll want to return as soon as possible. Enjoy!
The Roman Mansion / House is conveniently situated ten minutes from Pompeii rail station and twenty minutes from the entrance to the excavations. Our excellent host met us at the station and drove us the short distance back.
The accommodation consists of a kitchen, a bathroom and a bedroom in a building sited in the back yard of the owner’s house. In warm weather, you will probably make use of the lovely back yard with the pool, sun loungers and shaded eating area, but not when we visited in March. The kitchen is well equipped with a large fridge freeze, five ring burner, oven, double sink and microwave. Hot water is off a bottled gas boiler attached to the wall outside, which takes a while to heat up. The is also a washing machine and air conditioning. Heating is by a gas fire in the kitchen. There is another in the bedroom but it is not connected – the gas pipe is lying loose on the floor ☹ There is wi-fi, but it is off a cell-phone 3G dongle – a wireless access point off the house broadband would give better bandwidth and coverage.
Pompeii has many restaurants and cafés to choose from and, past the excavations, there a Carrefour supermarket.
Good base for exploring the area, Pompeii, Herculaneum, Vesuvius etc
Much more flexibility than a hotel room and we loved the courtyard area and pool.
Handily placed for Pompeii railway station - about 10 minutes walk and lots of shops and restaurants within easy walking distance. Definitely try Pizzeria Margherita (next door to the railway station) - the Pompeiano Rosso wine was a steal at 7 Euros.
We thought this accommodation was excellent value for money.
Finally I must reiterate what has been said elsewhere, Catello and his family are among the warmest, kindest and most generous people I have ever met. At no time did they intrude but equally nothing was too much trouble. A real privilege to have met them.

We had a wonderful time, the accomodation was very good and clean, the host and his family met us on arrival and the car was perfectly safe in the secure parking area. a small problem with the shower but once we got used to it, it was fine, plenty of really hot water!
The pool was a godsend as the temperatures were in the 30s most days and was 1.5m deep, and we were in it every chance we had.
We spent two weeks there and were not hassled by the family who cleaned the pool on a daily basis each (late) evening. We were quite central so a trip to Rome by train, a drive along the Amalfi coast, visits to Pompeii (walking distance) local train to Herculaneum,
bus ride to Vesuvius. plenty of local shops of all types, and more than enough restaurants to please anyone.
really didn't want to leave, such pleasant people and place.
My Wife and I would like to say a very big thank you to our hosts for making our stay such a wonderful experience.
