If you arrive at the Central train station in Naples (Napoli Centrale), on Piazza Garibaldi, Hotel Clarean is close enough to drag your luggage about three blocks to a hotel with a lift, and is convenient to the trains to other parts of Italy, including the Circumvesuviana trains to Pompeii and Herculaneum, and to the Metro station inside the train station. It is a quick cab ride from the airport. Don't forget, though, that like many hotels in Europe, it is not air conditioned, so you are getting what you pay for plus very loud street noise throughout the night if it is too hot to close the windows. The final straw for us was that both evenings we were there, we had no hot water.

We stayed here and at first thought we had struck gold... good location near central station, friendly staff, great sized room with heaps of space and a reasonable cost. However, after going out for dinner and to a football game we went back and needed a good night sleep before an early train the next day, Unfortunately the pillows were really poor, the bed felt like a cotton sheet on a timber bench and the noise coming from outside was too much. I may sound like my mum, but this was a really bad experience in terms of the sleep quality

Room Tip: As far away from the road as possible

Terrible stay, would not recommend it. The guy at the front desk was really rude, our room was not clean, the beds were super uncomfortable, there was hair wrapped around the one towel rack, there was no hot water, and the air conditioner was loud and dripped water. The area of the hotel is not nice either, and there were vendors right outside the hotel's door. We did not feel safe here.

Disgusting!!! Bed bugs!!! First time visiting Naples, and arrived at the what seemed to be a clean hotel....Beware!! Looks can be deceiving. Paid cash for two nights, but we weren't able to sleep not one night after a long train trip. Bed bugs came out of the carvings of the bed frame, called management and they confirmed that in fact they were bed bugs, at which point we asked for refund and were refused, but instead were offered another room. No thank you!! Reason for no refund was that the amount paid had already been entered into the system. I am absolutely sure that management could have compensated us in someway...This disgusting incident cut our trip very short, left the next morning Pronto!!

Room Tip: Not in this hotel!!

I came into Naples by overnight ferry from Palermo, with the intention of spending only two nights in the city, and then leaving by rail to go to the port of Rome, toi catch a ferry to Sardinia.
SO I needed a place that was central. Close to the port and close to the railway.
... close to the railroad station also to catch the suburban (not main rail) trains to Pompeii and Herculaneum.
And the Hotel Clarean was just perfect. A REAL port in a storm.
The "port" being a refuge from the huge renovation of Garibaldi Square, which the hotel borders, and which forces all pedestrian and car traffic into two corridors ~ one approaching the Central railroad station at the end of the street ,(the Clarean side) and one leaving it. (Although pedestrians can walk either way on both sides of the construction)

Nothing negative to say about this great little hotel. Pity about the construction outside, but I had a room with a balcony overlooking the square and there was no noise except for the occasional wail of police/ambulance sirens. (Naples is a big sity and Garibaldi square is on a main thoroughfare.

Features ~
~ All rooms are above street level reached by an elevator, in sight of the .reception desk.
~ room key is collected when you leave by reception, and given back when you return.
~ wifi was excellent
~ room was clean and neat
~ I felt VERY SAFE!
` had a bar fridge.
~ staff spoke English
~ great room air conditioning. (you control temperature)
~ free breakfast was your typical European carbohydrate rich fare (breads croissants, cereals, etc..) Coffee was made in individual servings by expresso maker
~ baggage storage was provided if you arrived before room was ready OR after check-out, until train departure time.
Overall, a real good experience.. And I would go back again.

I am a solo, senior traveler of 72,.
Safe travel in Europe is a book by itself.

With Naples, as with other main stations, walk to/from with a purpose; eyes directly ahead, have ticket pre-booked, no loitering in the station, get to you platform as soon as you can, turn around frequently, ignore all calls for attention...e.g. "mister....Mister..", if you have to stand, stand against a wall if possible; and wear your backpack on the front.

The thieves will have no mercy.

SZ.
