“Great Location”
Reviewed 25 December 2011

This cool, trendy hotel is in a great location. You can walk right out the front door and be in the middle of Madrid. The hotel itself is a trendy hotel, which is well finished and comfortable. The public area's give off that cool vibe of "the place to be" but the service can be a little slow. The restaurant is lovely, but the menu needs to be a little more middle of the road as some travellers may not find something they want to eat. Less is more there I think....
The rooms a are a lovely size with lots of space and amenities. I do wish these hotels would have proper hairdryers though, those nasty things on the wall are terrible! It can also be a little dark, then then again I find that in a lot of hotels.
All in all I love this hotel and would recommend it.

-Best location in Madrid: It is located on Gran Via, the "Fifth Avenue" of Madrid. I walked to most of the museums and attractions from there.
-Close to public transport: Subway(metro) a 2-minute walk away, Tourist sightseeing bus stop across the street, Airport bus stop 8 minute walk away (Only €2 to the airport)
-Good service from check-in/out staff
-Free WIFI with good reception
-Not all rooms are quiet, but I got a quiet room on the side street as requested

This is a hip hotel where my wife, child and I stayed for several nights while in Madrid while I was attending a conference. My one distinct memory of the room was the bathroom, which was lovely. The room itself was awkward. The "king sized bed" was actually a pair of single beds on casters -- I swear that they were IKEA -- so they kept sliding around all night, separating.

The food here is touted as being gourmet, but it was extremely pricey for underwhelming, even disappointing results. And, yes, Europe is expensive -- but at $6 for a cappuccino out of an automatic machine, it seems silly. There's a Starbucks 200 ft. down the street, go there.

And the service was indifferent, even slightly contemptuous of "too many questions." We asked several times for help with finding a gluten-free options for restaurants and came back with a web search. We also had questions about the cleanliness of our room and came back with some unsatisfied answers.

What to recommend about it -- the location is great. The lobby and bar are often filled with beautiful people. And there are literary quotations stenciled on the walls, so book lovers will enjoy having a wander through the halls.

Our room had a quote from Italo Calvino's "Invisible Cities" which was great to see -- anything that brings that wonderful book to people's attention is wonderful. But here's the question: if it's "The Hotel of Letters" then why is there no library?

Stayed only 1 night in de las Letras- but wished I could have stayed longer. Beautiful remodeled rooms- complete with Balcony views overlooking Madrid. Modern fittings and lighting- big Bathrooms and closets. Each room had king bed and "sofa seating area". (beware- modern boutique hotels dont believe in privacy- bathroom only had sliding door, all balconies connect) Great for a wedding anniversary- not a first "getaway". Hotel was extremely quiet and tranquil.

The lobby bar was spacious and grand. Did not get to see the library (conference inside) however, every floor/ every room has a quote from famous authors.

No parking facility- public parking lot behind hotel is closer than what the concierge recommend to guests.

Central to everything in Madrid- great restuarants in neighbourhood- dont bother eating in hotel- plenty of local tapas bars.

Already booked to go back!

Room Tip: Ask for 4th floor for standard delux, 6th floor for the "penthouse" duplex suite.

Great location...got the triple room, nice with big bathroom. Metro stations walking distance. Service was so so but didn't really need them for anything.
