Great place to stay, clean and simple. The building is a little old, but it's fine. Really nice staff, and great location near Gran via and the subway. We had a great experience!
The next time I'll certainly stay there.

I stayed in the hostal Machin from the 18th of August in a private room. It was a fine place to stay, I've stayed in better but I've also stayed in worse places. The location is perfect, less than a minutes walk from the Gran Via metro station. The first time walking down the street I couldn't find the building because they only have a tiny sign over the intercom, but if you look at the building numbers instead you shouldn't have any problems. The street itself can seem with kinda seedy - I'm not sure if the women hanging around were prostitutes or not - but it's very safe. The staff were fine, it seems to be one guy working at reception, but he was helpful when I needed directions.

The bad things about this place are that they don't have much of a communal area. There is a terrace for smoking but that closes at 10pm. The worst thing was that I didn't have a window in my room. They have fans over the head of the bed, but at night some natural ventilation would have been nice.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a window

I have stayed at Hostal Machin a number of times, and it never fails to deliver. The hostal is very very central - 2 mins from Gran Via metro station - and is located in a pleasant old-style Madrid apartment building. The first thing you'll notice is how immaculately clean it is kept. It seems all of the rooms have a sink and some have showers too. The beds are comfy with crisp white sheets and fluffy white towels. The shared bathroom (not sure if some rooms have their own bathroom) is scrupulously clean and spacious. There is a truly amazing terrace on the upper floor from which you can look over Madrid's rooftops and enjoy a beer or glass of wine. All of the staff are very pleasant and could cope with my almost non-existent Spanish. The hostal is literally minutes from bars of Cheuca but it has none of the seedier look of some of the hostals that are on top of noisy bars. Hostal Machin is not to be missed - excellent value, friendly, spotlessly clean and a real haven of rest in a big, brash and gutsy city - I love it!!

I've only stayed there with my boyfriend for one night.

This is not definitely the place for people how's looking for party, but no problems for us since we're not really loking for it.

The man in the front desk was quite polite, but not really friendly. He explained the hostal rules and explained what we've asked. That was all. He gave us the keys to the hostal to come and go wenever we wanted.

The place is really clean, which for me counts a lot, and has the greatest location!
