I just had a such nice day in Madrid with Strawberry Tours and the guide Javier who actually is an spectacular guide. The informations that he gave to us during the tour were really relevant. I did 2 tours the old and new city with Javier and he showed to us with a lot of energy and his passion for this amazing city. Really nice tour, amazing guide! Highly recommended!

Having already visited Madrid and seen most of the "major" sites, I was very interested in their "Barrio de las Letras" tour which is offered in the free, group format every Saturday at 11 but was unable to fit it in our itinerary, so I requested a private tour for my mom and me and Brenda in their main office was very helpful in arranging one for us on Sunday afternoon with Ignacio Rodríguez, who turned out to be a wonderful young man (warm, funny, highly educated) as well as a fabulous guide (highly knowledgeable in Spanish history, literature and the arts, articulate in both English and Spanish, and lively and engaging). At our request, he kindly met us at our hotel right on the edge of the Barrio de las Letras (Huertas) district, which required him to do the tour in the reverse order of what he typically does in the group format, and at the end he led us to where we wanted to go next for an early dinner. We spent over two very enjoyable hours getting to know this historical and picturesque section of old Madrid, learning about the fascinating literary figures who lived and worked there (from Golden Age giants like Cervantes and Lope de Vega to Calderon de la Barca and Tirso de Molna, to 20th century greats like Garcia Lorca and Picasso). I'm a Spanish teacher and learned a great deal (fascinating rivalry between Quevedo and Gongora, for example, was completely new to me), and we were both particularly enthralled and moved by Ignacio's stories toward the end of the tour about the Civil War and the dramatic removal to safety of the Prado's masterpieces (first to eastern Spain, then through France to Geneva). Ignacio was a delight to converse with, more like a very well-informed friend than a guide, and he even shared stories of his own family's history during the Civil War and his own experiences in the Spain of today and recent past ... along with some great poetry and music recommendations! In short, a lovely way to spend a couple of hours, both educational and highly enjoyable! On top of that, it was extremely affordable in the context of a private tour, roughly half of what we're accustomed to paying, so I advise inquiring about a private tour if their group tour times don't work for you, and ask for Ignacio!
