We only managed to book into this hotel for 3 days of our 7 day holiday because the hotel was fully booked a good sign. The reception area was light and airy and the bar and seating areas beautifully decorated. The reception staff are very helpful and welcoming. Our room was very nice with a sea view and balcony lovely comfortable bed and a fridge in the room. Our only negatives were the room service we ordered smoked salmon sandwich with lemon mayonnaise and cucumber what arrived was dried bread with thick butter no mayonnaise and no cucumber . The pool bar and area is great they have a nice selection of cocktails although they had no tequila during the 3 days we were there so margaritas were off the menu. Would highly recommend staying here but I’d avoid the room service .

The first thing to say is that this is a special hotel. I have stayed several times previously, mostly for work purposes, but this time I was on holiday. It feels individual and you are also treated as an individual guest while staying there, not just a room number in a cloned hotel that could be anywhere. The staff were exceptionally polite and friendly; nothing was too much trouble for any of them. They are clearly excellently trained. The room was light and airy, tastefully decorated, exceptionally clean without any clutter and everything you needed was there. The view from the balcony across the Bay and the Strait was great too. The bed felt luxurious and comfortable and we slept very well. Important to say this: the air conditioning worked well and was QUIET. So many hotels have noisy air con and they don't seem to care! The bathroom was clean and the shower powerful and a good size.
During this coronavirus pandemic, I have noticed that many hotels have cut back on their breakfasts and limited the menus. The Rock Hotel is different. They are careful to keep guests socially distanced and have ensured good hygiene during breakfast, but the menu choice was as good as anywhere I have seen and it was also delicious. Coffee was immediately served upon being seated and constantly topped up if required. Special mention here to our waiter who really should be commended for his attentiveness. It was noticed and appreciated. Thank you.

There is only one, but important, issue which loses The Rock Hotel a star. For the whole of Sunday breakfast 2 people on the table next to us were allowed to chain smoke throughout our meal. This was even while the canopy was covering the breakfast area. It also clearly bothered other guests, but instead of explaining this to the antisocial guests, an ashtray was provided for their benefit! Not only is it very unpleasant to have to inhale second hand acrid tobacco smoke while having breakfast, it is also illegal in Gibraltar in an enclosed space. I would hope the management would be minded to ensure that this never happens again.

In all other respects, The Rock Hotel is a truly relaxing and exceptional place to stay.
