Owner description: The Air Forces Memorial at Runnymede commemorates by name over 20,000 airmen who were lost in the Second World War during operations from bases in the United Kingdom and North and Western Europe, and who have no known graves. They served in Bomber, Fighter, Coastal, Transport, Flying Training and Maintenance Commands, and came from all parts of the Commonwealth. Some were from countries in continental Europe which had been overrun but whose airmen continued to fight in the ranks of the Royal Air Force. This Memorial overlooks the River Thames on Cooper's Hill at Englefield Green between Windsor and Egham on the A308, 4 miles from Windsor.

I always try to get to this place at least once a year, very tranquil (as to be expected), always worth the walk to pay respects. The climb to the top of the towers to view the surrounding counties is amazing on a clear day.

The building is very much a competent work of its time. The highlight comes when you climb the narrow staircase by the chapel and emerge on the roof with a spectacular view of the Thames valley.

I visited the Air Forces Memorial last year on a gloomy day. There was renovation work going on and although I got a lot out of the visit I left wanting more. I went back on a gloriously sunny Sunday and was certainly glad I did. The renovation work was complete and access to the roof was available and that alone made it worth a visit as the view is phenomenal. You can watch the aircraft leaving or arriving at Heathrow (depending on which runway is in use) and you can see as far as Canary Wharf, probably about 18 miles away. The main car park for the memorial is just down the road but limited parking is available on site for disabled visitors.

If it wasn’t for the planes flying out of Heathrow directly overhead in some instances.....
OK, I accept this is a fact of life with the memorial being so close to Heathrow, however, and it pains me to say this, I attend the 2 traditional services held here every year and without fail, the services are regularly interrupted by planes overhead making it impossible to hear what is being said. That leads me into another point as despite there being a PA system in place it is still not enough to almost everyone in attendance to hear what is being said. Either it doesn’t work or the volume is so ridiculously low that it’s pointless to have in the first place. And it’s not a new thing, it happens at almost every service. I’m completely baffled, as it never seems to change from service to service. I’m not sure who sets it up, but they need to test it out before use.

So, 2 specific things I need to gripe about:
1: The planes out of Heathrow. Is it not beyond the wit of man, or the organisers in this instance to ask Heathrow Air Traffic Control to divert some planes away from the Runnymede Memorial site when the 2 annual services take place (for about 30 mins)? Out of respect, apart from anything else.
2: Whoever sets up the PA to actually make sure it’s fit for purpose and works?

Despite that, this is the most wonderful memorial to visit. Everyone should visit it at least once in their lives. It is incredibly peaceful (except for that annoying Heathrow traffic) and reminds us all that over 20000 people from mostly Commonwealth countries, with no known grave lost their lives and are immortalised by name here. It is moving to see that descendants or other descendants/relatives (often from overseas) of those listed continue to visit in memory, and leave something behind for others to know that they are still remembered. I have read so many moving tributes over the years that almost every visit always reduces me to tears from reading at least one of these, often more.

For details of the 2 annual services held here, see the CWGC website. Traditionally, the main RAF one is held in May (2nd Sunday usually) and the other traditional Remembrance service is held on the 2nd Sunday in November.
Go visit and honour those who sacrificed their lives for us.
