This hotel is gorgeous, it is very well decorated and comfortable. The rooms are more spacious than I am used to in Europe, which was a nice benefit. If you want to see the sights in Barcelona, this is a great place to stay - it is right off of La Rambla but there is no noticeable noise from the streets while you are sleeping. There is a quaint and fun little bar in the hotel that is a great place to start the night. We had a gorgeous drink with chilis. If you stay here you should not need a taxi to most places. The Sagrada Familia is not within walking distance but everything else is. If you are one of those people who must have their Starbucks, there is one right beside the hotel, although the coffee is Spain is incredible. On a side note, there are two little cafes right behind the hotel should you need coffee or food quickly but want to venture outside of the hotel.

It's probably the best hotel in Barcelona. We stayed last weekend there for the second time and again we were convinced by the personal and cosy approach of this classic but totally refurbished hotel. Its situation on the Ramblas 100m form the Plaça de Catalunya is perfect for all visits. 2 pools, spa and lounge anmenities are original and nice. The top floor terrace with heated outdoor pool and lounge bar (closed during winter) gives a great view over the city. Personnel in the reception is very friendly and helpful. Breakfast ist very complete and of good quality. Tough the view is limited in the rooms and the noise reduction between rooms is just ok but very good to the outside. 2 beds on wheels is not so comfortable for couples. For family with kids I would prefer a hotel closer to the beach.

My wife and I stayed here for 3 nights in February for a trip for my 30th birthday. On arrival at the hotel, the hotel advised us that they had upgraded us from a standard room to a superior room which was a nice bonus! There was a slight issue with the room we were given but we mentioned this to reception and they moved us to another superior room no questions asked.

We found the staff were all very helpful and friendly.

The location is great, about a third of the way down La Rambla, about 5 mins walk from Placa Catalunya. There is a supermarket about 2 mins from the hotel as well which is handy.

The room was very luxurious (the bed was huge!) and was well equipped with toiletries, slippers and robes. We also liked the different lighting settings the room had (there were 4 different settings).

The leisure facilities were very good – there was a pool, steam room and sauna. We would have preferred the steam room to be a bit hotter but this wasn't a major issue. We went up to the rooftop pool area as well which looked great but unfortunately the weather was far too cold for us to try it out! The pool was heated and would be great retreat from this busy city in the summer.

The hotel bar was a nice place to relax, although the drinks were very expensive! 6 euros for the cheapest beer, spirits varied from 7-10 euros and even soft drinks were 5 euros. It was nice though, we usually went back there for a drink after being out in the city.

Overall, we had a great trip and if we return to Barcelona we would stay here again.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back of the hotel (away from La Rambla) are quieter.

Just back from two days in Barcelona and stayed in hotel 1898.
What a central location just on la ramblas with great facilities including rooftop heated swimming pool. Fantastic modern rooms.
Great location to base your self for a trip to Barcelona..

My husband and I spent 4 days in the 1898 in the beginning of february.
This hotel is perfectly located on La Rambla. 5 minutes walk from Placa Catalunya where the the airport shuttle is located.

The hotel itself is beautiful, although a tad dark inside. It feels like evening all the time inside the hotel.

The Room

We had a superior room, decorated in black and white with a view to a side street.
The room itself isn't large, but is big enough, with ample wardrobe space and a big bathroom. The bed is huge, super comfortable with huge fluffy pillows.
The bathroom had a lovely full bath with waterfall shower, really nice ETRO bath products, bathrobes and slippers.
In addition there's a coffee tea set equipped with a kettle.
My favorite part of the room was the light settings, that can be changed from any part of the room and control all the lights. A small but really nice touch.

The only problem we had was with the safe which malfunctioned a few times, but the reception were quick to assist.

The Spa...
This was my favorite part. A beautiful spa equipped with two saunas and an indoor swimming pool. The spa is open from 08:00 to 21:00 which is perfect to start the day with a relaxing swim or unwind after walking around all day.

The Outdoor Pool
I ventured to the outdoor pool only once because it was freezing outside. But the pool is heated, and it's a fun experience to take a warm swim outside in the winter

The thing I could say about this hotel that isn't very good, and only because I have had a different experience in others was that the day of my arrival it was my birthday. Other hotels I have stayed at usually acknowledged this in some way. I have had far less expensive hotels send cake and wine to my room without having to even tell them it's my birthday. But that's all about hotel policy... The 1898 didn't acknowledge my birthday in any way, not even to say congratulations

Other than that, it was a great stay.
