Owner description: The Casa Amatller is the most complete work of Catalan modernism. Built by the architect Puig and Cadafalch in 1898, it is located in the called Manzana de la Discordia, next to the famous Casa Batlló by Antoni Gaudí. The façade has been admired since its beginnings, although its true treasure is in the interior, thanks to the original conservation with all its furniture and decoration. Casa Amatller offers daily visits in 4 languages and its opening hours are from 10 am to 6 pm. Also, it offers commented visits, at 11 am 12am and 17 pd. A unique opportunity to discover the true history of Barcelona at the beginning of the century!

This building is very Flemish in design and looks different from its weird and wonderful neighbour Casa Batllo. You can enter the foyer for free to see the lovely staircase and there is a delicious chocolate shop at the rear with a cafe attached if you need a rest from the hordes!

Dear visitor,

Thank you for sharing your opinion in Trip Advisor. Casa Amatller is open as a house museum since 2015 and there is a coffee shop and a chocolate store in the ground floor because the owner of this building at the beginning of the 20th century was a chocolatier. It is a modernist building by the architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch.

Yours sincerely,

Casa Museu Amatller.

Largely over shadowed by Casa Batllo next door, this gives you a great insight as to how Antoni Amatller and his daughter lived, it is very well preserved and has an audio guide in different languages guiding you around. At the end of the visit is the chocolate shop which has delicious chocolate to try and buy!

If you find Gaudi's designs (e.g. the casa Batllo next door) a bit too childlike, ornate, or even clownish, then casa Amatller is your antidote: serious, somber, strait, manly. And yet, the facade and the interior spell riches and taste as well, although, with the large window overlooking normal folks outside, it also gives off a whiff of nouveau riche. It's a building an American tycoon or a Russian oligarch would envy, but ultimately decide against because it is, despite its splendor, rather small and narrow - a factory owner's pride of achievement, not a display of pomp or power. The ground level houses a cafe, where most people have the hot chocolate (into which you dip soft toasted bread).

This is one of the houses on the block of discord known for unique modernist buildings. The tour takes us upstairs where the rooms have original furniture, tiles and floors made of parquet or mosaic. You can also visit the cafe and taste the marvelous chocolate.

The best inside design in Barcelona, worth to visit if you are already at Casa Batlo. After the visit take a hot chocolate as part of the Barcelona history and take break there.
