BCN eixample hostel

BCN Eixample Hostel promises much but offers little and not what is promised. Moreover, do not be fooled by good reviews from less than discerning travelers. Two showers for 25 and more people, a 3x3 dining area with a table and six chairs for the same 25 to "breakfast" and a small residential filter coffee machine that cannot make more than six cups of coffee for all the guests are only some of the irritations.

The double bed we had to sleep on was broken and the mattress fell partially through it when we tried to sleep on it. We reported it to the owner / manager the first morning. Five days later there was still no attempt to fix it and the owner refused our request for an alternative room or bed.

Nothing in the hostel is clean. The showers are dried out during the day, but not cleaned, e.g. long hair remained in the showers for days.

We can illustrate many other weak points, but the above suffice to warn all ... spend eight to ten Euros more and stay somewhere else.

The only good thing about the hostel is its location in proximity of Barcelona Sants station and some tourist attractions.

Room Tip: The best room is in another hostel!

We stayed here because our flight out of Barcelona was cancelled, so we needed a cheap room for another night. We booked it at the airport using a smartphone app, which didn't really allow us a proper look at the pics.

Our room was more of a store cupboard with a bed. There was a lot of noise from the rest of the block - the small window opened up to the centre 'core' of the building, facing all other windows. Sleep quality was really poor because of the noise (and we needed to have to window open for cooler air). The door handle kept falling off which effectively locked us out, although the door itself doesn't have a lock - the landlord gives you a padlock to close the door when you leave. The bathroom was grim, with no toilet paper and a dirty towel strewn across the floor.

Additionally, the landlord was quite rude to us for no apparent reason, especially since we saw him greet another guest very warmly. For example small things like handing over the padlock without actually looking at us, and giving us €7 change instead of the €8 we were owed (he didn't have enough spare change. It's only €1 but he didn't even apologise for short changing us - a business should have enough change to pay their customers!)

Finally, there was no fire alarm in our room, which is just a basic safety feature that shouldn't be missing. Sure, it's a cheap place to sleep (or at least try to sleep) in central Barcelona, but hostels around the world have improved, and unfortunately this is a very bad hostel standard (I have stayed in hostels which are both better and cheaper). Other reviews say the breakfast is good... we can't say as we didn't stay for it, we left as soon as we woke up!

The hostel was overbooked by the manager/owner of the hostel and this was not informed to us beforehand. Instead, when we reached the hostel, we were told that the hostel is overbooked and he would book another hostel for us. He did book another hostel for us online but that was far away. Overall a bad experience for us.

The hostel is situated in the city centre aside from the tourist district, though not too far from it.

There is not much public place in it, but every bed has at least one power outlet, so it is not needed.

It was cold in the hostel during my stay in the beginning of December, but I guess it's the case for 99% of Spain and Portugal hostels during this season.

Breakfast is simple, but good considering the price. It was ready at 5:30am when I was checking out.

If you feel like having a nice, enjoyable and cheap stay in the capital of Catalonia, this hostel is a right choice. Located just right at Gran Via can make your holiday time a bit noisy, but that's an expense of living in the centre. It is quite near to the city most famous places and to the beach. We highly recommend for passionate travelers.
